i am in desperate need of help. I am currently trying to potty train 3 yr old twins - have put myself under loads of pressure as they are starting nursery in about 5 weeks and HAVE to be potty trained for that. Potty training an absolute nightmare and every day sees more poo and pee on the floor. I am past the end of my tether and am so angry all the time that I am actually worried about what I might do next. I feel totally stressed out and isolated as we are fairly housebound because of the pants thing. I feel guilty all the time about the way I am treating my children and really don't know what to do next ( I have a 5 yr old as well as the twins)Any saviours out there with pearls of wisdom?????

Ah! The bribery and lying route is popular I see!

Oh pop, nightmare time. I remember losing all my credentials as a patient parent when my twins were toilet training. I think the only answer is to be as calm as you can but I really do know how impossible that can be sometimes and even my exceptionally laid-back mate with twins the same age as mine lost it a bit trying to get hers to use the potty. Re nursery- have you thought about lying and sending them in with heavy duty old fashioned training pants (the plasticky cloth ones)? If they'll be starting part time they might not have too many accidents in a shortish session? I did find that nursery helped my boys with using the toilet. Seeing other kids go seemed to help things click for them. Sympathies. I hope someone has some miracle ideas for you.

I agree with twiggy. Stop! You are putting yourself and the DTs under considerable pressure. It won't work under those circumstances.

Deffo use bribery. A bowl full of smarties and a smartie each time they wee in the potty and a couple each time they poo. Star chart, whatever works in your house.

Tell the nursery that the fact that they are at nursery has caused them to relapse.

Give yourself a break... Put their nappy's back on, they don't seem ready ..... All nurseries have to take children in nappy's these days, (I should know I work in one )
There was a thread about this about a week or so ago

I know exactly how you feel it took me about a year to train my DS, he was a nightmare, accidents everywhere, every 20 minutes. I thought i was going crazy several times. He was trained just in time to start pre-school.

I had to replace carpets and my 3 piece suite once he was trained.

Dont have any advise except to percivere (sp?)or spend a couple of hours in the garden each day to reduce cleaning up after them.

I hope you get some good tips though, I too have twins (20months)that are showing signs of being ready to be potty trained.

Stop

put them back in nappies

take a breather

realise that they're only 3 and it can be a frightening thing to realise that stuff comes out of your body and is flushed away

start again in a week or two calm and collected and use bribery

  • tell nursery they are potty trained but are obviously having a relapse
