Parenting

Do you parent like your parents did?

I feel sure this has been covered before so someone may be able to point me in the right direction.

If not, I'd value your input after my mum and I had a very indepth discussion about our parenting styles.
The main thing is praising children. Mum was never praised as a child unless she did really well. My mum praised big things, like doing well in exams, passing a driving test etc, but not smaller things. She didn't want me to grow up big-headed. I have trouble being confident now although its better as dh compliments me. So I have very consciously gone the other way and tell dd (and now ds) how proud I am of them, little and big compliments, and dd is so unbigheaded.
My mum still finds it hard to compliment anyone but she is getting better, due to my nagging!

On a more light-hearted note, I specifically buy dd fashionable clothes as I never had them. My first pair of jeans were home-made

There're plenty of other things but that'll do for starters.

not nearly as well as my mum

mine is a kind of pale version of my mum's parenting.

dh is like his dad - nothing like mine thank goodness.

I can fully sympathise with the home made jeans...
Just to give a small eg of my parents' style, we called last w/e to say grandchildren were having skiing lessons - oh no, oh dear I hope they are all right. Their main concern on phone at the moment is has dd got all she needs for grammar school in SEPT ffs. OK she got 98.7% to get in but has lots more time to behave badly before then as far as I'm concerned. Thet are so anally retentive I kind of wish I tookj drugs just to upset them. And no, this isn't a new feeling. Been there since 1978. If anyone said our parenting styles were alike I'd either kill them or myself.

I parent nothing like my parents and neither does my DH - we both agreed that if we were to be like them than it would be better not to be parents at all.
