is this right?

A Situational Leadership approach is often effective as a good leader will find herself changing instinctively between styles according to the people and work they are dealing with. Moving from Directive (bureaucratic) through Coaching ( ), Supporting (participative) to Delegating (action-centred).

or would participative be better with coaching?

either way I am missing one

Free rein is also called laiser faire. You need to look at John Adair and writers such as Blanchard and Hersey. Blanchard wrote some really simple and easy books called the one minute manager which explains everything in about 5 pages.

I think both coaching & supporting are participative...maybe?

Why are you having to label everything though KatyMac?

Some of the writers on leadership talk about dialogue. Here is a link to a paper from the cabinet office which explains everything. www.nursingleadership.org.uk/pubs_lit_.htm

It is on a website I created with my then business partner and hope it helps.

the question is
"Identify factors that will influence your choice of leadership styles and explain why your leadership styles are likely to positively affect your team"

next I have to

"~ Assess your own leadership behaviours and potential by referring to a relevant leadership model, your organisation?s working practises, and by collecting feedback from others.

~ Describe what actions you could take to improve as a leader"

Which is easier as I am very bureaucratic and need to develop my participative (Esp coaching) and delegating

Adair J. has written loads on this topic including Effective Leadership: a modern guide to developing leadership skills
Blanchard's work mentioned above by glittterfairy is very readable.
Mullins L.J.(2002) Management and organizational behaviour is worth a look.
Good luck!

Thanks Unfitmother - I think I finished

"Identify factors that will influence your choice of leadership styles and explain why your leadership styles are likely to positively affect your team"

with

To choose the most effective approach for you, you must consider:
? The skill levels/experience of your team
? The work involved (routine or new and creative)
? The organisational environment (stable or changing)
? The natural preferred or natural style.
A Situational Leadership approach is often effective as a good leader will find themselves changing instinctively between styles according to the people and work they are dealing with.
Moving from
? Directive (bureaucratic for example when some-one is new they need lots of directive behaviour) through
? Coaching (Participative ? when they are developing themselves ? lots of direction and lots of support),
? Supporting (also participative ? less direction and lots of support as they become confident in their role) to
? Delegating (action-centred ? low support, low direction ? they are capable and competent).
The change can be seen
? For legislative issues a bureaucratic style ensures that the rules are adhered to.
? A participatory style will aid development of new systems.
? Action-centred deals with
o Achieving the task
o Developing the individual
o Building & maintain the team;
and I feel will naturally lead to delegation.

What do you think?

How about

"~ Assess your own leadership behaviours and potential by referring to a relevant leadership model, your organisation?s working practises, and by collecting feedback from others.

~ Describe what actions you could take to improve as a leader"

As

My own leadership style tends toward an autocratic/bureaucratic style and I continually slip into telling/teaching. This is confirmed by exercises on this course and people?s descriptions of me. The childminding has lots of systems (which I created) ensuring things are done ?my way?. I struggle with delegation and this comes across as a lack of trust, which I don?t believe it is, as because I want everything to be the best and ?perfect?. Perhaps due to my high score for completer finisher in Belbin.
I need to develop my coaching skills, being careful not to teach or tell. I need to delegate more and be accepting that tasks may not be completed to my high standard initially. I also need to allow people to develop their own sytems and ideas.
Hopefully I will become more situational with my leadership combined with action-centred leadership.

??

Do youthink I need to work on my need for approval as well

Only 1400 words last weeks was 2000 - I got 92% on that but that was due to my spreadsheets - this has no spreadsheets so I'll be lucky to get 50%
