My son's homework is too hard for me

I'm terrible with maths, always have been...I'm not stupid, I just cannot get my head around maths.

Anyway, my son is coming up to 9 and his maths home is starting to challenge me. I know this sounds stupid but I really do struggle with it so obviously cannot help him. The teacher doesn't seem too fussed as to whether the kids do their homework or not but obviously he should be doing it anyway.

Is there anyone else out there like me? What am I going to do when he's older??

I like the idea of a course, but...

Do you have to help him? Couldn't you show him how to help himself instead? (as in get a fun book or computer program or something) Surely you can't expect yourself to help with every subject he might study at school, so you'll have to take this line with some subjects.

(My dad (also not stupid in other ways) proudly used to tell us how he'd got 1% for his last maths exam at school and leave us to it -- it got me and my sister through A level and on to university maths. Just don't make your DS think maths is 'hard' and he might get to like knowing more than you about something.)

lol kerrymum (I'm waiting for a dc to take up Mandarin...)

I run a homework club for my year 7s and have parents drop in.

How about seeing if your local council run classes for parents? I know our school runs curriculum based maths classes now and again.

I worried about the same thing when dd started secondary in September and my maths isn't bad. I had to ask a question on here a few weeks back and the maths wizzes were fab! There are a couple of secondary maths teachers on here. Just call and they will come!

Ask us but I would also mention it at the school, you will not be alone and their may be an informal session they can run.
