Getting an 8mo to sleep in her cot?

So long story short my daughter has a bad transition from Moses basket to cot at about 3-4 months old. Ultimately tired & unable to listen to her crying she ended up co-sleeping with me (as she didn't fit in the basket & wouldn't settle in the cot) she now 8 months & this has become the norm.. I know I should have persisted at 3 months but to be honest it was easier & I really didn't mind her being so small & used to being close. But she's bigger now, turns over, almost crawls (drags well for long distances) & i really want to get her into a secure sleeping environment for her safety. Has anyone attempted this after co-sleeping? I'm dreading it already!! Thanks...

Thanks for the replies ladies I love the mattress on the floor idea but unfortunately don't have the room... she does have her own bedroom at the moment & if I used the cot mattress I'd be worried she roll off & it's small & she's a fidget! Also love the drop rail idea but unfortunately her cot does not have one!! I'm tempted to crawl into the cot with her to get her off then try & attempt (ninja style) to creep out when she's asleep!! I really hope I don't break it Grin

I had a drop side cot, which I jammed up against my side of the double bed, with the drop side lowered. This made the cot a sort of extension of the bed, with no barrier between me and the baby, but safely walled with cot bars on the outside, so she couldn’t fall out. Both my dds were happy with that and slept well. I moved dd1 to a mattress on the floor at 15 months, as dd2 was due a month later and I needed the cot for her.

We moved DS to a double mattress on the floor of his room which has worked well. I can lie with him to go to sleep and if he wakes, but otherwise I can escape!

We established a wind down bedtime routine - bath/books/milk and then used a slumber buddy. They're really very good and make it feel really cosy and relaxing. I seem to remember sitting in a chair in the room for a few nights too and that really helped.

Yes - we have an 8 month and trying at the moment. We put her down in the cot for a week but as the week went on her sleep got worse not better so we have stopped and are now focusing on naps in the cot until she has got used to it. She has been teething and I understand 8 months is a bad time for separation anxiety so taking it slow for now.

I feel your pain, our 8 month old takes up nearly half a king size bed and we are desperate for a good night sleep....
