he's a bit rashy but too young to do much tummy time without bobbing/getting worked up

his bum could do with a bit of air as it's a bit raw... but, HOW? there'd be wee and BF poo everywhere!!

What wipes are you using?

The only time that DS ever had nappy rash was when we used Johnson's & Johnson's wipes one weekend we were away when he was about 8 weeks old even though he's only ever been in disposable nappies. Worth trying a different brand?

As for nappy free time, given the size of your bathroom, putting some towels in the bath and then letting him play in there for a little bit sounds like a good idea.

why does he need nappy off any way, my DD only had nappy off to change then clean one apart from when in bath, with rash i used sudocream on the odd occasion it happened

When mine had bad nappy rash (in disposables) I put her down for her nap without, lying on a towel. I guess with a boy you could also put one on top? I also vote for metanium and cloth nappies. With thick fleece liners you can honestly keep them dryer in cloth. The previous experience you had could be as simple as the washing powder you were using. Otherwise nature baby care nappies are good and have less chemicals. Also they are all different, my first daughter never had it at all.

I button Ds vest so it's at least not spraying the walls and it catches the poo and put a couple of bath towels down under him.

yeah that's an option, I do have some old plastic birthday party table cloths. am leaning towards the hose-down-ability of the bath at the mo though!

(agree to get bacck to thread. just had to stick up for poor old pidj)
or what about getting one of those huge waterproof cloths? you know thhe kind you get for painting on.the table? spread it out on the floor, put a big towel on it and let him play?(

So, keeping strictly on thread cause I don't see what the type of nappies worn has to do with how to do nappy free type dump him in the bath with some (washable) toys, while you sit on the bathroom floor. We have a similar bathroom!

And FWIW thrush rashes are also more of a bitch to get rid of with cloth nappies too than disposables! its a total myth that babies don't get rashes with cloth - cloth forums would be at least 25% quieter than they are now if that was the case!

yes nextphase the bath is about twice the size as my bathroom floor space Blush

amonia burns are a common topic of conversation on cloth nappy forums nickelbabe, yet the exact same people posting on those threads about needing to only use fully lined and strip washing etc are on general forums claiming that you don't get rash with cloth Hmm - I suppose that in a way I'd agree, I wouldn't describe blistery amonia burns as just rash either, but I'd rather more frequent mild rashes than even one episode of burns thanks!

anyway I didn't ask about nappies! or even say which kind I was using! I asked about the technicalities of no nappy time with boys! I though there might be a magic trick to doing it neatly LOL Grin but seems from the replies there isn't - just surround em with wipable surfaces and let them get on with it!

anyway, DC1 is not this baby, is it?

what's to say he would get a rash from cloth just because the other one did?

My little guy can shoot poo farther than he pees. He got the cat the other day! I just put him om towels, but in the bath with an old towel underneath sounds like a very good idea. I'll be sure to warn the cat.

oldebaglady - no need for that - i was just thinking the exact same thing as i read through - DD has never had a nappy rash with a cloth nappy.

i would say put a vest on, fasten it up at the bottom and change it if he wets it.
you only need to be nappy-free for an hour or so.

Would there be more space in the bath, with you in the bathroom, than both on the bathroom floor?

Report
oldebaglady · 30/01/2013 17:23

metanium is on the shopping list!

we have poos during nappy changing which can at times over reach the change mat

I'm thinking either in the bath on a towel.. or in the door way of the bathroom feet facing in - our bathroom is tiny, very little floor space so if he was on the floor in there he'd be right up against the bog which is a bit grim but there is only a postage stamp of floor space in there! - we do have a very large kitchen with a tiled floor though - would it be a bit wrong to do it in there?

Too much draping would surely restrict the air flow? so we'll just.... erm... go with the flow!! and make sure he's surrounded by wipable surfaces!

as we would say to DS1 when he was potty training "never mind! willies can be tricky!" Grin

I've tried draping wipes, muslins etc over ds but he's very good at wriggling them off immediately! So we put a giant old bath towel over changing mat and lie him on there. He loves naked time so much that it's worth cleaning up the tiny bit of pee that might overreach! We now make sure he's right in the middle of the room though as the walls have taken a bit of a battering in the past Grin

I have the same problem - was planning on cutting rectangles of towelling and somehow weighting the corners so it's a bit harder for him to wriggle or kick off.

Yesterday he managed to wee sideways while on his cot top changer, into his cot and all over his nicest outfit which was hanging on side of cot. Nice one.

We've always done no nappy time with ds (now 16 mo) and when he was that age it was on a big old towel. He'd often out-pee the range of the towel, but it's pretty innocuous at that age. He rarely pooed - in fact bf poo only once, and that was on holiday. Oh the embarrassment of trying to explain the stained towel to our Croatian host!

Now he's walking we get poos while standing a lot more frequently...

Have only ever done nappy-off time in the bathroom before and after bath - fortunately DS has not really had much nappy rash so not needed to do more

"Cloth nappies?"
the worst rash (rash is too mild a word actually, more like BURNS) DC1 ever got was from cloth nappies!

We just use a big towel. Yes he sometimes poos and wees but it's never terrible amounts and towel just gets a hot wash after. My DS loves his nappy free time before his bath.

We couldn't have naked time as ds1 was like an uncontrolled hose pipe !Wink
