Would be writers?

Does anyone know what happened to this thread? (I don't remember the exact subject it was under). I was very motivated by it, and have now finished an article, but don't know the best way to pitch it to a magazine. I wanted to go back and read some of the pointers that were on there, but I can't find it!

Thanks...

very odd joanne, just did a search and couldn't find it either! Anyone else found it? Let us know.

Can't find it either. Would it have been deleted due to Willow2's name change, do you think?

But that thing was a separate thread wasn't it? I started the would-be-writers one and can't find it anywhere, even under a search on my author name. Don't think the name change should be a reason. Curiouser and curiouser.

Yes, WWW, I thought it was you who had started that thread. Doesn't a thread have to be removed by the person who authored it?

hmmmmmm.....

So, how are all you WBW's doing, anyway?

that's "Would Be Writers", btw...

I realized it just looked like I had made a typo with WWW's name!

If it's been removed cos of me I'm sorry - asked for various messages to be removed but maybe tech was over zealous.

My article on home birth is in the November issue of ABC Magazine, the one suggested by MABS. I think it's only available in Suusex.

you know it's really ironic that you want a would be writers thread when this website is so deeply hostile to journalistic approaches. i asked someone to keep a pregnancy diary (paid) for a magazine about four months ago and got stream of abuse. now what you'd all like tips from journalists on how to pitch to magazines... doh.

Controversial badmamma, but I do know how you feel. I left for a while because there was such vitriol being hurled at journalists (we're all bad and all the same, apparently, according to a very vocal minority) which I found pretty upsetting. Yet there's a magazine addicts thread too. I find it terribly confusing. Magazines are created, written and edited by journalists. I went into journalism because I am also a magazine and supplement and newspaper junkie, and hoped that I would be able to interest, inform & entertain others as I had been interested, informed and entertained. Obviously not everyone feels the same way, but I think only health visitors get more flak! I did post some hints on this thread before. Happy to help, but feeling rather as if I'm putting my head above the parapet...

I told my friend nobubbles that there were mums with expertise in this area on mumsnet. I think that it is a good thing to help share info to help others, even it is not involving childbirth, breastfeeding or childcare. Those mumsnetters who aren't interested do not need to follow the thread so please don't feel you journalists out there do not have welcome useful information to share.

I'm a magazine addict and a would-be writer and I don't recall ever having hurled vitriol at journalists here. I did once get mildly irritated when a researcher posted a question 10 times but that's it I think. Badmamma, sorry you had such a bad response. I think it's possibly because people get over protective about mumsnet (in that a lot of stuff here is very personal but hey! it is the internet) - your request last year sounds reasonable to me. Just because a 'vocal minority' have been unpleasant about journalists in the past doesn't mean the rest of us can't be would-be-writers though does it?! Aloha, we have disagreed (and agreed) in the past but I sincerely hope it was because we held opposing views, not because I thought you weren't entitled to your opinion because you're a journalist IWKWIM. Not very eloquently put, but welcome back. I hope you'll stay and I could use some tips sometime if your head stays above the parapet. Anyway, I'm glad this thread exists again. Have a magazine commission and am working on a book so it's going well.

BK: If it ever sees the light of day. Less said the better!

Re "hating journalists" (my words - not anyone else's) I don't understand either why a request for someone to do a pregnancy diary was apparently met with such venom. Seems a nice enough topic to talk about etc. Having said that, surely everybody can accept that there are very many levels of journalism - some good, some not so good and some frankly crappier than a really crap thing. (There I go, eloquent as ever). It's the last level that unfortunately causes friction I fear.

I don't mean that to sound elitist - some of the best writing comes from the "tabloid press" - but so does some of the worst - and the same applies to the broadsheets.

MABS, thank you!! It's the first thing I've really written since the school magazine 20 years ago so I certainly have no ambitions to be a writer but was very chuffed to see my name in print. I was telling a friend who lives in Horsham but she has never seen the maagzine. Do you know where she might be able to get a copy - in what sort of places is it available?

Mt fisrt published article came through my ddor yesterday and it was very exciting. It is about Neonatal Skincare and is in the November issue of the RCM Midwives Journal. I wrote this, whilst getting fed up with the process of trying to get my ' Pocket Book on Breastfeeding ' published. Needless to say this was the boost I needed. Mears put my webpage onto Mumsnet as a link and I have had lots of support from all you lovely ladies ever since. So, it does pay to share information and evryone benefits from the experience.
My address is: www.sharontrotter.org.uk

lou33 thanks. It doesn't seem to list particular places though. My friend obviously isn't going to the right places! I'll get her to ring them and ask.
