Hausfrau, do you know if you can get suet in Germany (atora style)?
I will need it at Christmas for making mincemeat (MY recipe, better than shops, twice as much brandy and fresh apple!!)

Am also disturbed at the thought of no lard!

Oooooh....bread and dripping......the brown tasty yummy stuff when cooking beef spread on a slice of bread..... Pure heaven..... [salivating emoticon] anyone fancy cooking me a roast...now please!!! Oh yeah and as far as health issues go my grandparents were brought up on bread dipped in the liquor (the melted lard and bacon fat combined) and are well into their 80s and not obese!! Everything in moderation...def agree with bringing back cookery lessons.....that's how I learnt all my nutritional info and basic cooking skills. Kids at our school complained when they has to make pasta salad as it contained sweetcorn and peppers!!! FFS!!!! it looked bloody lovely too.....but then again you can't expect youngsters today to choose anything that looks remotely like the natural product!!! Ok off my soap box now!!

So do we know exactly why lard has been withdrawn? Has an official reason been issued by the Queen?

Report
fairyfly · 19/11/2004 12:30

i am storing it on my backside

pmsl! Marthamoo
Lard hunt!
(of course if the book was really called that the government would have to withdraw every copy. Just in case it encouraged kids to eat it raw or something!)

lol, i now have visions of mums all over the uk creeping through rivers and forests to find Lard! Which poses a question... if they have withdrawn it... Where have they PUT it??

how very apt this thread is. today as a northerner living in the south i endured countless lard comments from my boss as one person asked if i would like a sandwich in a meeting he piped up " she only eats lard" again when i was offered a biscuit in another meeting " nah its a lard only house in her house" i also encountered a deep fried mars bar comment.

these were closely followed by some dodgy ballgown references aimed at a meeting in which 3 gay guys attended and another comment about women drivers - especially those who smoke and drive ( he smokes a bloody cigar)he braked from 40 - 30 in one second flat after i stupidly pointed out a speed camera and then nearly missed knocking over a poor student

i smiled at each one - waited until i got into his car and replied to my boss " i have never met such a bigot in my life - your a fucking disgrace"

no wonder i dont go down well where i work

In olden days the beef was spit roasted and the fat dripped into a tray. This tray was used to make the yorkshire puds and if no yorkshire the servants (and children) would get bread and dripping - no meat

I think it's the best bit - toast a thin scrape of dripping (the brown bit at the bottem) and a tiny bit of salt

Dripping is the fat that comes off the meat when you do a roast. I pour in into a cup and keep in the fridge. I can either reuse for another joint (beef or lamb only) or have on toast.

Dripping makes lovely potatoes (nicer than lard - cos it has the bits off the meat in it)

What exactly IS dripping?

hatter · 17/11/2004 22:27

good post hmb. My mum has several times even stunned fellow teachers by making a cake in class (she's a special needs teacher). Wow, they say, I never knew it was that easy

I'm getting obsessed. At ASDA this afternoon,I checked out the lard shelves. The price label had 'withdrawn' written over it.(But they did have a couple of very nice looking tubs of dripping Katiemac).

I'm off to interrogate my friendly butcher tomorrow-I can't make mince pies without lard for goodness sake.

I let my DD have toast and dripping as a special treat - it can't be any worse for her than a Happy Meal (and she isn't allowed them). A very very occasional treat is 'Dip' a bit of bread dipped in the pan of meat juices while the roast is cooking

You can't make proper pastry without Lard.
