Classic grey marble headstone being ordered for wonderful and lovely Mum, who passed away last year. My problem is that Mum was married and widowed twice. I want to include her maiden name, but also also the names of both her husbands. The use of the word nèe only denotes the name of a woman before marriage. How can I show the two married names? Mary ( nèe Smith) Jackson then Wilson reads strangely. Is there a word like nèe used to denote a married woman being widowed and then remarrying and changing her name? Advice on wording. Much appreciated.

In Australia we would say Mary Wilson, nee Smith, late Jackson

I'm sorry for your loss. Sounds like a beautiful headstone.

Could you have

'First name surname' (as in original surname'
Much loved wife of
Husband 1 (and their dates
Husband 2 (and their dates)

That'll make it clear she was widowed twice and give the other two surnames

Or

What her surname was when she passed

Previously 'first name first surname'

Nee (birth surname)

Sorry, I hope that's clear. I can see your challenge in trying to get the important info across.

Im sorry for your loss.

What did the death announcement say? Can that provide guidance or the funeral company/gravestone company? This won’t be unique so they can probably offer advice.

What about:

’here lies

Mary Elizabeth Jones

née Clarke, formerly Bryant’ (in smaller type)

Sorry for your loss 💐

Thank you all for your kind words and for such helpful suggestions. I’m going to sleep on this and then attempt a draft tomorrow. I will write the various suggestions out and see how I think they might look on the headstone. I want to convey her personality and that her 90-year-old life neatly divided into three 30 year categories…. As a single woman, then as a wife for 30 years and widowed and then remarried and a wife for another 30 years. She was a very lovely Mum and also a wonderful wife but she was her own person too. I want to define all those three aspects of her. Thank you for your help.

Something like:

Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth Smith, beloved wife of Richard Jones (1940-1990) and Robert Davies (1940-2020), and mother of Isthisblocked and Sibling, born 1.1.1940, died 20.3.2024
