So I've always been a house music person in recent years but grew up on garage but also love George Micheal, Elton John - all the people my parents played when young.
Anyway, have recently re-discovered Alanis Morrisette Jagged Little Pill and am going to her concert this year. I guess she is country? Angry country? No idea as I'm not a music buff. But whatever, I love Jagged Little Pill and my husband is slowly getting used to her being played in the house. Then I watched A Star is Born last night with my bestie. Plus every time I see a US film with those old country bars and a country singer in, I love it!
I need to discover some good country music. I've googled and you tubed but it keeps coming up with almost r'nb style videos and beats.
I am new to country genre but love the feeling of it...... what can I listen to?!

I'm Texan and I personally love the King of Texas Country music, George Strait and the sophisticated country swing of Lyle Lovett (he was the guy briefly married to Julia Roberts).

I am partial to Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Charlie Pride, Gary P Nunn.

Being Texan and from "the border", my favorite is Tejano which has elements of country with a bit more flavor. My favorite song of the genre is the blues-inspired ballad, "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" by Freddie Fender.

Enjoy your discovery of music.

Nathaniel Rateliffe and the Night Sweats - Never Get Old is a good song to start with
Lukas Nelson (son of Willie) - Just outside of Austin is a lovely song
The Avett Brothers - I and Love and you
Chris Stapleton - Tennessee whiskey

@Polkadotties

Anyone else going to C2c this year. I went last night to see Miranda Lambert, she was brilliant

I went to see Luke Combs in Glasgow on Friday - amazing! Was worth the six hour round trip to see him, hoping he does a tour next year.

@Domino07

Wonderful suggestions thank you! I may also investigate alt rock too. Looking forward to having something apart from house and my husbands old school rnb to listen to. Feeling ready for a new music phase!

I'm a similar age! I'm not sure how I discovered it but it's almost all I listen to now and really enjoy it
My whole music on my phone is like this now

Some days, I just love country music and use Absolute Country radio to get ideas of who I like to listen to. Or ask Amazon prime to do a playlist. If I am feeling the need for something a bit edgier, I like Yelawolf's earlier country style.

Toby Keith and Zac Brown Band are my 2 favourites but second previous suggestions of Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley.
For a female voice - Kacey Musgraves.

Absolute Country Radio is very listenable. They have a no repeat guarantee weekdays, a good mix, all the musicians mentioned. There’s a Sunday afternoon show- front porch which is more folk/ Americana.

Oh wow, thank you so much. I thought I might have been off the mark in saying Alanis was country. I just love her though! But love the country vibe and will defo listen to all those recommendations, thank you. Very strange to be discovering a totally different genre in my late 30's that I had never considered or is even a thing among my friends. Keep any more recommendations coming please! Smile

Agree that Alanis isn’t really country…

Check out Kasey Musgraves 2018 Golden Hour, really good modern country/pop album. She’s got a new one too but I’ve not listened to that yet…

Taylor Swift’s earlier stuff is country pop..

Would second a lot of the recommendations on here. You also might like Lucinda Williams. Going back way earlier, check out ‘Love Hurts’ by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.

There's a big country scene in the U.K.

For example:
Jade Helliwell
Stevie O'Connor
Gasoline and matches
Gareth Nugent
Gary Quinn
Kezia Gill
Backwoods Creek

Give them a look up on social media & YouTube
There's also British country festivals which are worth checking out, Buckle & Boots is one of them

You need Carrie Underwood’s “church bells” on YouTube. You’re welcome.

If you are interested in ‘older’ country, then you could try listening to the show in Aberdeen by The Highwaymen -just search it on YouTube- and love the whole experience of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash performing in front of a welcoming crowd. It’s Country magic.
