This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who tested a mattress from the the Hilary Devey Collection

More info and details here: www.hilarydeveycollection.co.uk/ - either a Diamond or Diamond Luxe Mattress have been put to the test!

Non testers, to be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice, please answer the following question: What are your best tips for ensuring a good night's sleep?

Here’s what Duvalay have to say “With over a third of our lives spent sleeping, picking the right mattress is an important factor in making sure you get a good night’s sleep. In an era of mass-production, turning to a handcrafted mattress can be a way of ensuring you don’t suffer from aches and pains after an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Combining traditional handcrafted bed-making techniques with the finest raw materials and innovation, the Hilary Devey Collection is a premium range of hand-made mattresses. Each one is produced from Duvalay’s new Yorkshire factory, which the company moved into a year ago, quadrupling floor space to keep up for the demand for Duvalay products. With Hilary (ex Dragons Den) at the forefront of the design of the collection, personally selecting key features and materials, the collection brings a fresh take to a male-dominated industry by providing affordable luxury with a glamorous edge”.

“The Diamond is a supreme quality mattress that features 2000 individually nested pocket springs. With a summer and winter side, it provides you with a good night’s sleep all year round thanks to its cotton side for summer, which wicks moisture away and a wool side for winter that provides a snug-like effect - furthermore it has been Tried and Tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

The Diamond-Luxe takes all the best elements of the Diamond mattress, including luxurious materials and hand side-stitched borders, and features a range of new elements that further add to its glamorous take on the perfect night’s sleep. It’s also one of the first mattresses to the UK market that offers both an ingenious new pocket spring called MidasTouch and a revolutionary new filling called Wooltec®. MidasTouch is a unique spring system that has been specially designed to offer initial softness but also provides much needed support once weight has been applied. Each spring is encased in its own fabric pocket, to actively reduce partner disturbance for a relaxing night’s sleep.
The Wooltec® filling is produced using one of nature’s finest materials, lambswool, and uses the latest is modern manufacturing techniques to create vertically bonded fibres, which allows air to circulate much more easily for greater temperature control. The specially bonded fibres also increase durability and comfort.

Testers, please answer the following questions:

First impressions - please share these - on delivery, comfort on first night, look on your existing bed frame, feel of the mattress cover - do share a photo on the thread if you can. We will add more questions to this thread later on.

Second batch of questions - to reflect on your reasons for taking part and your initial views of the new mattress.

Which mattress and bed size did you choose?
What is important to you when decided on a new mattress?
How important is it to have natural fillings inside your mattress?
How important is it for your mattress to be British manufactured?
On first impressions, do you think anything could be improved?
So far, do you think that your new mattress will improve the quality of your sleep and if yes, why?
Does Hilary Devey’s endorsement and influence on the collection have any impact on your perception of the collection?

Third lot of questions - now that you’ve had four weeks use of your mattress, we’d like you to answer a few more questions.

Are you finding your bed comfortable?
Has it improved sleep quality for you and your partner?
So far, are you pleased with the quality and look of your new bed?
Before having a Hilary Devey bed, did you know the features a handmade mattress offered? Are you now able to tell a difference?
Did you read the care instructions and are you happy with the guarantee given?

Now that you’ve had a little bit longer, please finish your testing with us by answering the following:

~ Are you still as satisfied with your bed (if applicable) as you were at the beginning of your journey with Duavay?
~ Have you found that the handmade finishes to your bed have made a difference to the quality of your sleep?
~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you purchase handmade over mass produce?
~ If you were to buy a bed again in the future, would you consider buying a Duvalay mattress?
~ Do you think your Hilary Devey bed is value for money?
~ How important is it to have a summer and winter side to your mattress to keep you warm & cool in both season? Please number 1-10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.
~ Would you recommend the brand to your family and friends?

Really wanted to test this mattress as it looked amazing!!

My tip is to read in bed - a proper novel not iPad - as it relaxes the brain before bedtime.

Non-tester here

White noise in the form of a fan helps me in the summer months. Blackout curtains and a cool room. An aromatherapy bath before bed.

Non tester - I definitely need the room to be the right temperature, comfy PJ's and peace and quiet.

Non tester here.

The older I get the more the following matter a lot for a good night's sleep - a comfortable mattress, luxury pillows, Egyptian cotton sheets and peace and quiet. When younger I don't remember any of this being very important and I could sleep on a clothesline!

Non tester - after years of not sleeping well, I have found these things have helped:
Good pillows and mattress
Black out blinds
Going to bed early
Cutting down on sugar
Getting the kids to sleep in their own beds

Further feedback and photos as promised.

So we finally got time to swap the mattresses yesterday and I'm pretty impressed with the feel and look of it. It was a perfect fit for the bed frame, very luxurious and seems well made. Then obviously I've covered it with a mattress protector so it's a bit irrelevant I suppose.

I can't get over how deep it is! I thought our old mattress was thick but this is on another level - a definite "Princess and the Pea" feel to it as Tentomidnight says! Though, I'm happy to report we slept perfectly well on it so the similarity ends there.

I'm not sure I would have noticed a difference between the summer and winter side but luckily both are labelled up so it was clear which way to lay it.

I'm a bit daunted by the prospect of turning it once a week but will do as I'm told!

Non tester. Unfortunately, my good night's sleep comes in a blister pack as it helps me not to wake up in agony in the middle of the night.

Tester here (thanks so much MN & Duvalay!):

please share these - on delivery, comfort on first night, look on your existing bed frame, feel of the mattress cover - do share a photo on the thread if you can. We will add more questions to this thread later on.

The order was delivered within the stated timeframe by two very helpful gentlemen. My first thought was how much thicker and more substantial it looked than our existing mattress. Once out of the packaging it felt really luxurious.

Idiot here didn't realise there were two different sides to the mattress so I now realise why I've been getting so much hotter at night, which was to be my only complaint . Will be flipping as soon as I get home to see the difference - will report back! Will also take a photo!

That aside, I'm enjoying feeling higher up in bed - feels like being in a really naice hotel - and the comfort is amazing. The night before the new mattress arrived I spent the night tossing and turning due a spring digging into my hip. Only gripe is that I overslept this morning, as I didn't want to get up!

What are your best tips for ensuring a good nights sleep?

Wrap yourself up in as many soft blankets and pillows as possible and snuggle into your own little sleepy nest.

Air your bedroom and keep it slightly cool. Make sure your curtains/blinds keep the light out. Try to keep it quiet. Fresh bed linen feels and smells fab especially if you can dry it outside. Change the thickness of your quilt depending if its summer or winter. Keep your bedroom tidy and looking peaceful so you want to go and rest in it.

Sleep is partly about having a clear conscience, winding down with classical music and even though it contains caffeine - I always have a last cup of tea...

Non tester - absolutely no screens in the bedroom, black out linings in the curtains, and a tower fan for hot weather

BeeMyBaby · 20/07/2017 17:32

Non tester: make sure your pillow is the right height for you (if I don't have a very flat hard pillow I really struggle to sleep), and don't have DCs and pets who wake you up in the middle of the night for toilet issues.

My best and only tip for a good nights sleep? WIND-DOWN!! About an hour or so before bed-time I like to relax as best I can, remove all distractions and maybe watch a film (but preferably read a book). Maybe light a scented candle and just chill-out. That way when it's my usual bed-time I'm all ready and relaxed to just drift off quickly and peacefullyGrinGrin

What are your best tips for ensuring a good nights sleep?

  • A decent mattress- I really like the idea of summer & winter sides.
  • The right pillows are essential, to avoid neck or ear pain.
  • Nice and dark, so heavy curtains which block out the light. Clock radio facing away do no glare.
  • Not using screens close to bed, as the blue light tricks your brain into thinking it is daytime and stops you naturally resting.
  • Keep the air cool, even if it means snuggling under a duvet.
  • No alcohol and a warm drink before bed.
  • Don't eat too late.
  • If you need help after a stressful day, use aromatherapy sprays in the room or linen sprays.
  • Get romantic Wink

My family are in the habit of kissing goodnight and saying "I love you". It's also said as we all leave for our daily routines.

I, personally forgive everyone and clear my head before I sleep.

Non tester. I know ideally you shouldn't use screens before bed, but it's too tempting so I do it anyway...but my tip if you're going to do it, it's good to use a blue light blocking app (I use Twilight) to reduce the glare from your phone. Also a decent sized bed so you're not fighting for space.
