This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who are taking part in the MakeTime2Play app product test. Testers downloaded and used the newly updated app aimed at parents and carers, which suggests play ideas for kids.

Here’s what MakeTime2Play has to say: “Whether you have a newborn or a 12 year old there is so much to explore with our updated app; it’s free to download, available on iOS and Android devices, and has over 400 play ideas! You can filter the play ideas to fit your needs by choosing between location, age of children, number of children and time.”

“The app isn’t just about fun play ideas, it also provides information on the benefits that children receive when playing. There is a page detailing the physical, emotional, creative, social, behavioural and inquisitive benefits of play. Symbols on each play activity page will tell you which of these benefits your child is receiving from each game they play.”

Please post your feedback on the MakeTime2Play app and you will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Please answer these questions below, but also feel free to add your own comments:

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?

Thank you for taking part in the product test and good luck with the prize draw!

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app? 1 and 6
2 – Would you recommend the app? Why? I would for younger children. There were some good ideas for games and is useful to have an app to look up suggestions while you're playing. I found that some of the activities are too young for my 6 year old
3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app? I thought it worked well and was easy to use
4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use? The favourite feature worked well

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
2 years old and 10weeks old.

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
Yes. A lot of good suggestions which I would nothink have thought of myself.

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
Clean and functional design. Not too "busy". User-friendly.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
Very useful as a way to "bookmark" activities for later use.
Did not use the "Share" function but I can see how it would be a useful function to have.

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
Yes.

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?
None.

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
8-10

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
I would recommend it to new parents/carers or those with children of different ages if they were feeling stuck in a rut.
There are lots of ideas on the app, many of which we have already tried out in the past. But it was useful to use the app to prompt your memory when you’ve forgotten about particular games/ideas.
I really liked that there were some ideas to that you could try to fit into different time scales and settings.

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
Very straightforward, easy to navigate and simple to use.
Would be nice to scroll through list of ideas with a brief description rather than having to select each one to open.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
Didn't use either of these features but while can see how the 'favourite' feature would be handy to bookmark ideas, I don’t think I would be likely to ever use the “Share” feature.

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
There wasn’t a lot of differentiation between the 8+ & 10+ age groups. Not enough for the mid-older children especially those who might find everything “babyish” or too young. You could however suggest quite a few variants to games to make it a bit more challenging.

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?
Personally, I would particularly like activities that don't require specific equipment and materials & suggestions for games that can be run on-the-go.
Any activities to help make the processes of getting ready to leave the house & wind down for bed would be great.
Would also like fun activities for releasing energy post-school pick-up particularly for the non-sporty.
As others have already said, it would be useful for users to have a way to submit their own ideas or variations to a particular game/idea (e.g. via a comments post on an existing game/idea or a link to submit a new game/idea)
Link to Pinterest ideas (e.g for seasonal crafts & other related activities, etc)

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
11 years
2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
Not really for the reasons set out later, my DS, and I think his friends, would find the suggestions too babyish. Perhaps better for younger children.
3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
I thought it was very easy to use and well set out.
4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
The 'favourite' feature was useful but could not deal with 'share' but that probably reflects my technical ability.
5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
There was nothing suggested for my DS that either we did not already do or he viewed as too babyish. He has much older siblings and therefore needed suggestions he could do alone.

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?
No

  1. What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
    My DS is almost 11.

  2. Would you recommend the app? Why?
If someone said they were struggling to find things for their DC to do I might suggest that they have a look at this app. This would depend on the age of their DC though (see question 5.).

  3. What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
Good, colourful design and very easy to navigate around.

  4. If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
    I’ve not tried these features.

  5. Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
Lots of play ideas came up when I searched the 10+ group, but they were, in the main, things for younger children to do. My son was not impressed by the suggestion that he played Bingo to help him with his numbers! Also, when I searched for ideas for one player (DS being an only child), a number of ideas came up for games and activities for multiple players.

  6. Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?
As far as I’ve seen, the app appears to cover most types of activities.

Other comments: I initially had problems downloading the app on my Samsung phone but I think this was more likely an issue with my phone than with the app. Generally, I think this is a good app for finding simple things to do with younger children. However, I doubt I’ll use the app again. Some of the ideas for travelling were interesting, but we already do quite a few of the indoor/outdoor activities suggested for my DS’s age range. I had hoped that the app would suggest some amazing and original ideas to tempt my DS away from screens for a while, but unfortunately this was not the case.

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
9 months, and 2.5 years.

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
Yes, it was useful to have some extra suggestions of play ideas in one handy app.

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
It was very easy to use and an appealing design for children. Some of the play ideas weren't actually appropriate for the filters used though - one of the travelling games suggested was to go around collecting household objects, and an indoor game suggestion was to go to the park or play outside. I'd also like it if it could only suggest the same game once per search.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
I didn't use the 'share' feature, but I found it easy to 'favourite' ideas and it was very helpful to have them all in one place.

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
Yes

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?
No, I think there was a good range of activities.

1- What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app? My daughter is 2.
2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
I love most things about this app. I like the option of indoor or outdoor, it's easy to see different age groups. I also like the different time sections.
3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app? I found it very easy to use and well laid out.
4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use? I didn't use.
5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for? I did find some of the activities included in 2+ group were more suitable for 0-2 category. But otherwise nice choice. A few we already do but some new ideas aswell.
6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see? Maybe a seasonal category that could include themed ideas for Christmas, easter Halloween etc.

  1. My DC who I used the app for are 5 and 3.
  2. Yes I would recommend the app. It made me remember games I already knew but had forgotten about. It is very easy to use and I found the travelling section particularly useful.
  3. The design and navigation of the app is very good. Clear and easy to use.
  4. I used the share feature to send a couple of suggestions to my husband. The favourite tab appealed to my daughter as she liked making the heart red. I didn't find a way to quickly bring up the favourites I'd selected.
  5. For the age groups I selected I thought there was a good range of activities.
  6. I can't immediately think of any activities which are missing from the app.

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?

My DCs are 7 (nearly 8) and 4 (nearly 5), however we also tried some of these ideas out with their friends who are the same age and my two nieces who are 8 and 6 and my nephew who is 3

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?

Unsure whether I would recommend this app. It was good for ideas when we were out and about or when I needed an idea quickly to help disrupt arguments but a lot of the ideas were either not suitable for the ages specified or were things we already did. Often find better ideas on blogs/websites but handy to have something for on the move and one which didn't involve playing on the iPad.
Would probably add yo phone if free but wouldn't pay for this app now I have used it

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?

I found the app easy to navigate and I liked the design

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?

I found the favourites easy to use but I didn't master share (maybe I should have asked by 7yo😂)

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?

I think the activities were a bit young or basic for the ages specified. It didn't hold my 7yo DS or my 8yo DN attention for long but for the 3yo it was great and mainly ok for the 4yo old if I did 5plus activities

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?

No

Other comments.... it would be handy to have a list of things that might be handy as let my 7yo old have a go and he saw an activity he liked the idea of but that I didn't have ready to hand so a strop resulted.

Would like it to be more interactive

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why? I really liked this app, it is easy to use and it has lots of interesting ideas.
3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app? The app is easy to use, I only had to click a few boxes to get lots of ideas.
4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use? I used the favourite and I really liked the little blue heart turning red.
5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for? Yes, there are plenty of ideas, it would be good a regular update though to get some more.

What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
12 weeks
3 years
5 years

I liked them - there wasn't many new ideas, but it is reassuring that I do quite a few of them.

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
Yes - firstly its free and secondly its full of lots of different ideas.
I like the fact some are indoors and some are outdoors. Plus a like the fact some of them are 'back to basics ideas which sometimes get overlooked in this house (den building/colouring).

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
The design looks a bit dated, but it works! the navigation is straight forward.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
I didn't use these as they weren't that clear where they are, but having gone back to the app tp see where they are its quite obvious. to save an idea, I took a screen shot.
5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
yes - its a little difficult for a 12 week old but I liked the other ideas.
6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?
no I think its good

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?
I found ideas for my 2 year old,and under one year old.
2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?
I found some new ideas although i already knew some of the ideas.but any new ideas are good to find,so would recommend ,as most will find a few new things to try.
3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?
The design is good, and has a good layout that is is easy to navigate.I did find though when I clicked on indoor game ideas, ball games came up a lot,and some meant for outdoor so that was obviously a mistake with the app.
4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?
I found it easy and useful having the favourite feature, you just click on heart icon on the game page you are on and it saves in favourite on homepage, by clicking on heart icon you get the list of your chosen games.I found this useful as I searched through games ideas that I found more suited for my children, and that they had not tried to play another day.
I have not used the share feature yet,but it's useful to have that option if needed.
5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?
I found it could do with another category for maybe for under 12 months and 1+ as babies change a lot between 0-2,so they also like different games.
6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app? Well designed and easy to use although not that slick artistic design wise.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use? I only used favourite but I found it easy to use and a really helpful feature.

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for? I think so, although some of them seemed to come around again and again - it would be good to have a 'dismiss for today' function.

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see? It's hard to say. 1. I used this app with my DD who is aged 10. To be honest, I feel she was perhaps too old for many of the suggestions. She enjoyed using the app to come up with ideas and, although i had installed it on my phone, she also installed it on her tablet.
  2. I would recommend the app, probably for someone with a younger child and I think it would be more useful if it was your first child as you often forget the games you played as a child. Some ideas were not particularly helpful - Bat the Rat was given as a suitable activity for a 10 year old indoors - although a stuffed sock was suggested for use, I would not be allowing a 10 year old to use a bat and any type of "ball" indoors. Also, Ring O Roses was suggested - if my DD had a friend round, she would be highly embarrassed if i was to suggest this game to her.
  3. I really liked the design and navigation of the app - it was so simple to use and I liked the way you could choose as many or as few options as you wish. This would be particularly useful if you had children of different ages.
  4. I used the favourite option to bookmark a couple of ideas but haven't used the share facility yet.
  5. For the 10+ age group, there were a number of ideas but, too be honest, there were not many that we hadn't already used. There were a couple of suggestions that I didn't feel appropriate (as mentioned above) and there were one or two suggestions that acted to refresh my mind as they were ideas I did know about or had tried in the past but had forgotten about, so that was useful. It possibly is more difficult for the 10+ age group as they are more likely to entertain themselves rather than rely on parents to find things to do - don't get me wrong, I do spend time with my DD doing different activities but, unlike a 3 year old, she doesn't need to be entertained nearly all of the time.
  6. I can't think of a general area that is missing, but i feel there should be a button where you could offer up your own ideas - this would increase the popularity of the app and would ensure some "older" games and ideas don't die out.

Thank you for advising me of this app - I found it useful and interesting. I would recommend it particularly to those caring for younger children or first time parents as it has lots of good ideas, even if only acts as a memory refresher.

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app?

Five and a baby (6 months)

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why?

Yes - I think it's a great idea. Perfect for an afternoon with no plans, when I always feel like we should be doing something fab, but we end up watching telly!

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app?

The design isn't particularly slick, but it's fine, and it's easy enough to use.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use?

Easy to use, and I like the fact you can favourite- not sure I'd have spotted it if you hadn't asked.

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for?

Brilliant for the older one, for the baby I think the age range could do with being broken down further- lots was much too old for him.

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see?

Can't think of anything!

What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app? 2, 5 & 8.

Would you recommend the app? Why? No, while I loved the idea of the app the ideas weren't always age appropriate, or needed too much planning or required odd items like carpet tube. Lots of old ideas that you probably know anyway or would get from the many, many 'your developing baby/toddler' websites.

What did you think about the design and navigation of the app? Easy to use and looks good.

If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use? Didn't use.

Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for? Yes but I would have liked some new ideas and for games that could be played right now.

Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see? No.

1 – What are the ages of the DCs that you found play ideas for on the app? 1 and 4

2 – Would you recommend the app? Why? I would probably recommend it if someone mentioned they were struggling for ways to entertain their children but not otherwise.

3 – What did you think about the design and navigation of the app? It was very basic which is not necessarily a bad thing as it meant it was very quick and easy to use. However I'm not sure how 'professional' it felt.

4 - If you tried out the ‘favourite’ and ‘share’ features on the app, how easy and helpful did you find them to use? I've not tried these yet but I can see how I would use them in future, by searching for activities in advance and favouriting them to come back to later and to share enjoyed activities with my partner.

5- Do you think there are enough play ideas for the particular age group you were searching for? Yes although like another poster I do think the age group 0-2 should be further split up as there are huge differences in development between these ages.

6 - Are there any specific types of activities that aren’t on the app that you’d like to see? I'd like to see more activities that didn't require a lot of prep. I thought the lava game where you had to use cushions and things to get from one side of the room the other was great, the setting up lots of paints to make messy hand print pictures with not so much!
