Menopause

Advice, 39 and periods stopping!!

Hello everyone,

I am a 39 year old female and I have noticed in the last year or so, that my periods appear to becoming shorter.

Infact so short, that I have one heavy day and 24 hours later, they appear to be finishing?

I have read loads about the menopause, but it all says the periods get heavier and longer??

I am excessively tired most the time and hubby complains that I fidget at night. Covers on, covers off. One minute I am hot and then cold. I have also had some really 'black moods' and I feel more irrated at things. But I am a mother of 4 year old twin girls so that could be anything .

I don't think I have had hot flushes, or I haven't noticed. But I am more thirsty at night and my sex drive is well, non existent.

My menstrual cycles started when I was 9, so could I be experiencing stuff earlier??

Is this the menopause? Or should I be concerned about something else?

I feel stupid going to the doctors if this is a natural thing to happen.

All advice greatly appreciated!!!

Nic

Is there anyone here who suffers from hormonal migraines and can give me advice about treatment during the menopause?

I will post the outcome but will ask if I can have the full hormone profile and whether my tyriod is at fault.

My skin has gone beserk, I haven't had spots for many years - umm...at least 20+, now I keep getting the blimming things!!

It really is one thing after another!!

Thanks for the pointers I will be using them

It is quite straightforward to check. Ask your GP to do full hormone profile which will test test your FSH levels, Testosterone, Progesterone, Oestrogen and a few others. From that they will be able to tell what state your hormones are in and if you are pre-menopausal.

I'd echo girlnextdoors suggestion about thyroid. I have an underactive tyroid and one of the side effects is v heavy periods, like you it's so heavy on day one that it's almost over with by days two and three. Other symptoms are tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold.

Hiya all,

Well I keenly trodded down to my GPs wondering how the hell I was going to say what is happening to my periods....I was all fired up, gave the doctor I was suppose to be seeing's name to the receptionist only to be told I HAD COME ON THE WRONG DAY!!

Oh, how embarrassed was I!!! Especially when they asked me what it was about...

I now have the correct date in my diary and will have to work out what I want to say without sounding like some woman who feels her young days are coming to the end!!

Will keep you posted...

Try to get your dr to do some hormone tests- you might be menopausal. An early start though often means a late finish!

Don't want to sound "know all" but am 53 and have brilliant private gynae who spends ages talking stuff through.

My periods have never been heavy- they got closer together- cycles of 17 days at some point, then the bleeding got lighter.

Heavy periods tend to occur at the end of meno when you haven't had a period for months and the lining builds up.

The other thing to check for is THYROID- that can affect periods, temperature control and energy- and it is more likely at your age than meno- off to the drs for blood tests!

I have something similar and am still only 38. I have one incredibly heavy day (so heavy that leaving the house is nearly impossible and I might aswell sit on the loo all day) and then pretty much nothing after that. I also get a bit of pre-period spotting - whcih is V. annoying.

Anyway I did go and see my GP about 4 months ago. Her view was that despite how my periods might happen, the fact that I was still having one each month meant that I was probably still ovulating and therefore wasn't menopausal!! She did check for fibroids as apparently, these can cause heavy bleeding. Other than that she said it was probably just down to my hormones and recommended a mirena coil. Given that me and DH have not dismissed the idea of no. 3 however, I was not keen for a coil. so instead, she has prescribed me with some transexamic acid tablets to take on my heaviest day and this has transformed me!!

The other thing that she did say was that they don't usually refer people onto gynae for this kind of issue until after the age of 40.

Hello all,

{Chocolate} - no, I am not on the pill, I am allergic to it!! Got real sick while the tried all sorts out on me.

{Monty] - peri-menopausal sounds like a nice european dish doesn't it!! or something a little spicey!! - On a more serious note, I am very sure it is nothing to be laughed at.

I am going to book in with my GP and see what they say. It's funny really, that when you are young your mothers always tell you about puberty, yet as adults we have to rely on each other for advice about the golden years....just starting to get grey hair - they have popped up recently...

So I am looking at continuing to pay out for the joys of women's life for several years yet!!

Thanks for the info, I will see what my doctor says.

Hi twinsniki - that sort of happened to me when I was about that age but they still carried on for several years. You may be peri-menopausal which means starting to be but not ifyswim. As above the gp can do a blood test for hormone levels and can let you know what's going on. As I say it's probably just the beginning of what can be quite a long process.

best wishes

That's a sign of menopause, loss of libido.

Have you taken a pregnancy test first? You never know.
Pop and see the GP. He can send you for a hormone test to check your levels, they can tell from this. They'll chat to you about HRT if you need this. It's hard to say if it is the menopause so you should go along to see your GP and get it checked.
