Menopause

what's going on?

I'm 43. One child 15 years ago, no major illnesses or issues.

I've suspected I've been in peri meno for about 2 years - cycle was erratic for about a year, within 20-60 days, mad PMT etc. Had bloods done by GP, all normal except low B12 which has been treated.

Then I had bleeds every two weeks, for about 6 months, still had raging PMT with the added extra of generalised anxiety (not medicated) - had a TV scan to check what was going on - all clear.

Now, it's been over 90 days since my last bleed, no PMT symptoms and I'm feeling better than I have done for years Grin I'm exercising, awake more, interested in life - it's great !

Is this it? Am I through the worst of it ? Or am I being lulled into a false sense of security?

My concern is my bone density. There is family history of "thinning bones" (whatever that means, I'm not close to my family so can't ask for more details). Should I go back to the GP and ask for another blood test?

If you have no cycles they can do the tests any time.

Have a read of the info on the Daisy Network website. Google.

When would Be best to take blood if I have no idea what my cycle is?

My GP is one of those - "can fit you in sometime in the next 3 years" places , but I could probably have a telephone consult with the practice nurse and get the blood forms written out for me but How would I know when to have the test?

I suspect if it came back 'normal' my GP wouldn't refer me for a bone scan.

At 43 this is considered early meno, so your GP needs to do some blood tests ( days 2-5 only of your cycle), two months apart, to get a full picture and even then it may not be accurate.

You are probably very much peri meno- missing 3 cycles if par for the course. This could go on for years, but your GP ought to suggest a bone density scan now and follow up in another 2-3 years as you may need HRT to prevent osteoporosis.
