Hello everyone, I'm Trudi a mum from Edinburgh. My baby daughter Madeleine is 20 months old, and she's lots of fun! I nanny 3 days a week for a 2 year old girl Mon-Wed but Thur-Sun I'm a stay at home mum. I have lived in Edinburgh for about 10 years now and I really love it...it's gorgeous and a friendly place. I'm keen to meet up with other mums in Edinburgh so any meetings coming up I'd love to come along!

Small world. I did teaching practice in the same school in 1993 and some supply there in 1994/995. Our paths probably crossed.

I was '95! Know what you mean about the money thing- I am a fortune in childcare costs every month. But we would be worse off if I didn't work, even after paying care. We just have to be careful in other ways- obviously we don't go out on Sat nights

I remembered where my placement was in C'nauld- Abronhill- both the nursery and the ps. That was in winter term of '94.

Hi again, SM, don't know if you're still online. I did the PGCE too (at Jordanhill), probably a bit before you (1993).

When I go back to work in April, my DH is going to take time off to look after my DS. He has spoken to his boss, explained the situation and, though they can't guarantee it, they say he should be able to come back to work for them in a few years time. Money will be really tight, but if I was part-time, DH full-time and we were paying childcare, we'd only be about £10 a month better off. At least this way DH will be at home with DS and we'll have the holidays together. DH should also be able to pick up work some weekends and in the holidays. We don't have family around to look after DS, so this seems the best option.

Dmum, when dd was 8 months old I started PGCE and she went into ft nursery for 6 months, then into childminder's just 2 doors away. Only now do I realise what a hard year that was as dh frequently goes away with work.
She was at the same cm till I went off on mat leave, but unfort. my cm then decided to stop and now works in our local primary.

So now I have 2 cms. Dd goes to no.1 mon-fri before & after school. Ds goes to no1 mon-wed, then no2 thur- fri lunchtime, when dh picks him up.

They are both lovely and have had no probs. Luckily they are both just round the corner and work together, in that we can swap days if something crops up- like a hospital appointment.

However, I would much rather be at home and spend the time with them. Must buy lottery tickets

SM, how did yu find coping with work and your kids when they were little? I'm dreading going back to work a bit. Can't imagine having lots of marking to do and my ds to look after as well. He has been a really challenging baby and am hoping he turns into a placid toddler!!

mmmmmm..............yes

Tunisia. Started going away 2 years ago at this time- obviously lots cheaper but have to save REALLy hard for it. Been to Menorca last 2 times but want better weather.

I really appreciate it because if you stay at home it just disappears and dh doesn't take the time off. This way we get a week together- ds of 2yr1mo and dd just 10 at Xmas.

Loobie- what does ds's teacher say?

Report
Dmum · 09/01/2004 22:08

Loobie, sorry, that phrase "out of control" sounds terrible! What I mean is, he was in situations that he just couldn't cope with and kind of lost it (eg. the playground, the PE hall, sitting on the carpet to hear a story, etc).

Loobie, please don't think I'm being horrible about kids with autism. It's just that the limited experience I've had was of a child and a teacher who just couldn't cope. The poor child was out of control and no-one in my school was doing very much about it. The poor teacher was regularly in tears and dreading coming to work every day. Hope things get better for your son.

And I've said earlier, I love my class, and wouldn't want to be antwhere else.
I had another life before teaching, so do really appreciate it. Had to work mega long hours, travel all over.

Sorry, just realised that I sound like a typical moaning teacher. I really do love my job and wouldn't do anything else. (What other job gives you such great holidays!! )

Exactly- I think they get cloned after a while. Normal for a while then they even start talking in that same condescending voice.

SM, sounds like the HT in my last school. She would just get a whiff of a new idea/ policy, etc and we'd be having a staff meeting about it to "discuss" it. Actually, she did most of the talking. We wasted so much time "discussing" things that never really came to much. But I'm sure it got her brownie points at the next HT's meeting.

Come to my school- we had a staff meeting on wed and we went home wanting to slit our wrists/ win the lottery/ get legless/ all of the above. Due to the Ht's 'what McCrone means to us' We were still talking about Christmas. And we've to put in what stage we want next year!! By Wed!
Our school is so on the ball- whenever new things come out we're already doing it!!
