Hi everyone. Currently live on fylde coast but will be relocating to Cumbria in the next couple of months. i have a little boy who is nearly three. Looking at areas at the moment but thinking around Kendal area. We are staying in Milnthorpe soon to check out local areas more closely.

What is it like to live around the kendal area?
good schools?
toddler activities?
is it easy to meet new people?

scared but excited :-)

Hello all! I was on this thread a while back and, after failing to sell my house for ages, looks like I'm finally going to be moving to Storth (near Milnthorpe and Arnside, in case anyone hadn't heard of it! ) in late September. Can't wait!

My husband is going to be doing shift work so i couldn't really work shifts aswel because we have 2 boys. I don't want to come completely away from the sector but 15hr shifts and sleeps just won't be possible. I have a school/play background aswel and a health and social care degree but it doesn't seem to be ended as much as where I am now. I could possibly work part time at a push but it would be hard financially die to my husband taking a massive pay cut to change careers......have you worked in residential care long?

Witherslack is one of the best wages wise ( I work in a similar field!) and they've just had a big recruitment drive.
I totally understand the wanting a change as it's what I'm doing at the moment!

Hi wetoopere,

I work in residential childcare ATM, I'm up for a change because it's quite a draining job. The lay where I am is ok but seems to be lower for a similar role up there. I've been searching all sorts but I don't really want a long commute.

Thanks for replying, my husband is waiting for his posting with the police so it could be a number of places really which only adds to my stress :-). I have an 8 and 4yr old aswel so I am searching for schools etc. I'd really like to semi rural, we will almost defiantly rent out our house and then rent somewhere until we get used to the area. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the job market up there?? My husband will be all set but I'm struggling to find something in my job area ( with similar pay) . It's all a lot to consider but we are super excited :-)

Hi, just wanted to join this thread as I'm new to Kendal myself, I've got a 13 week old daughter and moved here when she was 3 weeks old! As I've been recovering from a c section I couldn't get out too much for ages but now I'm venturing out and looking to meet other locals and make friends - so if there's any meet ups of mumsnetters, I'd love to be there!

Hi. Me, my husband and 6 year old boy are thinking of moving to Carlisle within the next 6 months. Are there any areas in which to avoid. Would like a house near good schools, parks and some local shops. Also our little boy has some additional needs so some local support groups would be great. Thanks

We will be renting in Kendal area as keeping my current property and letting it out instead of selling.

Had a tenant for my house lined up but they pulled out this morning :-(

Kendal one way system is pretty dire though. It used to change fairl regularly but they appear to have stopef that now.

Ah. No, we are buying in Arnside. Most people I know haven't even heard of Arnside Confused. Good to hear people are friendly. My DC are older, so I am a bit concerned about it perhaps being a bit more difficult to meet people.

Sorry was talking about Kendal traffic, thought that was where you meant!
Yes people are friendly and lots of people who have moved into the area too which is great. There are local people who tend to stick to themselves but I think you'd find that everywhere really. Xx

Hi Topforshort do you mean roadworks in Arnside? Do you live nearby? When you said you still feel like a newbie, are people pretty friendly? ( sorry for all the questions)

Hi all! Moved up about 2 years ago now but still feel like a newbie so if anyone needs any advice let me know!
PS there is work on the road by the station hence the awful traffic!! x

Thank you! Can't believe that the next time we go up there we will be able to sleep over in our own house (although it needs loooooaaaaads doing to it). Am going to take my binoculars tomorrow and see what I can spy from the house windows. Did you go through the Dallam Tower estate to see the deer when you went up? I love it round there.

We had a lovely walk round Leighton Moss while we were there. Can't wait to go for more walks and explore the area properly. I love all those rolling hills with dry stone walls lacing across them. And views with the snowy mountains in the background. Hope you have a lovely time, Mumof3Teens!

Sounds good. We can't find any houses we'd buy atm. All the ones I really like are a bit too in the middle of nowhere - as in actually not in a village, but a mile outside one, with no shop etc. Ah well, we have until summer.
