I think you get rude, racist people everywhere. In England my husband gets greif about having olive skin, In Scotland he gets grief about being English. In Hong Kong (where his family are from) He gets grief for being white. You can't win! Idiots everywhere Australia, Britain, the world.

Seeing as this thread has been reinvigorated - just wanted to say hi. Irish born Sydney girl with English dh. Two dds ( 3 mo and 2 yrs).
Just wanted to add to the comments about the other thread about moving to Australia. I too, was utterly shocked and confused about some of the comments on the board. As someone said, it is not the Australia I know. When I look around at the faces of my university class (law - i am a lecturer) and I see kids of so many different backgrounds - I know we are doing something right.

i do acknowledge that indigenous people have had a terrible deal over history BUT there are plenty of people who are not like that and there is so much going on to break down the barriers of history.

I did laugh when this woman said they were in a rut and bored so the solution to this is to move your family to the other side of the world!!!

DH had to be restrained from signing up as Ocker and posting 'What are you wittering about, you stupid women? Get back in the kitchen and make my dinner!'. I said if he did, I would register on his sports car board and put my phone number. Everyone wants to marry me because I am the only wife who gives her DH Formula One tickets for his birthday every year

I was really shocked at the other thread.

I've lived in a lot of countries, and nowhere has been as good as Australia - and I say that with 10 years experience of living overseas.

Although I have to say I liked living in all of them more than London .

The only thing I miss from the UK is perhaps the West End, my family and being able to get to mainland Europe for £29.

Giru is up near Townsville - my aunt & uncle live up there and it's beautiful, and such an amazing community. My uncle was diagnosed with cancer last year and my aunt said that people just kept unobtrusively bringing stuff round for him, helping out without being asked etc, a really lovely load of people up there.

I hope to move up to northern qld at some point - I'm really a country girl at heart but work has kept me in cities for the past few years but I'm at the stage now where I can make the move and can't wait!

oh I could barely contain myself on the other thread. I refrained from telling them to stay in the UK - that we are sick of Brits coming over here and whining

I then deleted it and wrote parp but decided to ignore said thread.

I have lived in a number of places all over queensland and travelled a bit in Aus.... only racism I ever experienced was as an aussie in the UK !!

Thanks ladies. Dh has visited Australia and is really keen to relocate our family there. I have never been, certainly won't go without at least visiting once, but it is nice to get opinions from those who actually live there iykwim.

I was festering about it in bed last night and couldn't get to sleep. Silly me!

I feel that I could list of pages of counter arguments to the dross on the other thread but why should I?

My DD's godfather is in the process of getting his visa to move here - he is black (his parents both from the Caribbean). I hardly imagine he would want to come here if we were all so racist!!

I haven't bothered to write on the other thread as I just think it's so difficult to say "well I like it so everyone else should". Plus, it's a pretty big place. What appeals to one person in Melbourne won't necessarily appeal to someone in Dubbo or Giru.

I haven't found ozzies racist or sexist, and in fact have found everyone very friendly, polite -much more so than London!

Yep. It contains some of the most imbecilic posts I have read on Mumsnet. I did note that some of the worst came from people who had not only never lived there, but never even visited. 'I saw some Australians on holiday and they were horrible' - WTF? I know someone who was raped by an English man, so what?

No use even bothering to reply to sweeping generalisations with specifics of my experience (brother's Korean partner, mother's successful career as a nuclear physicist, father's pro bono work getting foreign students permanent residency visas - my Australia is neither racist nor sexist).

The irony of being condemned as racist by citizens of the country that gave the world the Daily Mail is certainly not lost on me, though.

Is anyone else a little pissed off at the opinions expressed about Australia/ns on the "be honest about what Aust is really like" thread?

I am feeling shocked that we are all being so horribly generalised as racist and sexist! This is not the Australia I know and love!

DH and I - Sydney. Been here for 9 months, both brits.

Love everything about it - the best decision we have ever made coming out here. The lifestyle, weather, people, everything is better than we had in the UK and nothing would make me want to go back.

hi mammyjo im a nurse too and live in brisbane. everyone has told us that last summer was cold and will admit we coped just fine.. winter has seemed very very cold.. so bring on summer. my dh hates the heat but has also frozen this winter! he too wants the sun back. just a different life style so the heat really isnt a major problem. i have lived in melbourne and it was hotand sticky in the summer. northerly winds. adelaide is also hot and dry. All the hospitals have very good air con.. maybe too good and the dont switch it off in the winter, so a bit like the heating in the uk.. too hot in summer and ok in winter.. here its frezing in winter and good in summer. i wear a fleece over my uniform in the winter here! (inside)
so dont let the heat put you off you really will acclimatise, and nursing can be pretty good over here, especially if you work in the private sector! bed making teams, orderlys that.. move/ turn.. patients for you.. good patient ratio, the last hospital i was at had ratio of one nurse to 4 patients on an early, 6 on a late and 8 over night!

Hi all. Sorry to crash your thread, but I am after some advice please.
I am a nurse and have made some enquiries about emigrating to Australia. I can see from the thread that you live in a range of cities and wondered if you could tell me what the places are like please. The heat puts me off a little but I am assuming that further south is not so hot? I could be way off the mark though!
