Social Workers access to my medical files

Does anyone know exactly what information Social Services are allowed to obtain from your GP/HV and what they are allowed to put in reports?

I realise that Child Protection issues play a part in this and because I have been diagnosed with PND they will continue to monitor my files but what confuses me is when my Social Workers starts including in reports details of my visits to GP regarding a Urinary Tract Infection, another visit regarding pain relief for Gallstones and the most recent report stating that I had attending a consultant appointment regarding the insertion of the Contraceptive Implant? Are they allowed to include all this irrelevant information in reports regarding my children's well being?

WestVirginia

No one takes any notice of your ramblings -why do you persist?

Resolution is giving prejudiced advice.

Don't be so silly, VW. There is little enough money around for social services without having their budgets cut.

Just because you have a massive chip on your shoulder doesn't mean that EVERY social worker is ineffective and untrustworthy.
May I remind you that this thread isn't about you.

Social Services waste money by their inefficiency and poor working practices.

Report
Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:24

Or (contraversial this) increase the money spent so that SWs can spend a decent amount of time on a case, need not think about the easiest option for them (often removal)and truly work with families.

Unfortunately for them no parent likes to be told they are doing it wrong, and most people's reaction is to be defensive if not outright hostile. Add to that the fact that they often have to deal with families that have issues set out in my earlier post, and it's a wonder any of them stick in the job. Someone's got to do it though.

Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:27

sorry - didn't realise this had gone on to page 2.

Thank you once again WV for your helpful and insightful comments.

"What had concerned them was not that she occasionally needed help, but that she never asked for help when it waqs needed."

It's all sounding a bit like those toxic parents, isn't it? "Well if you don't want my help..." when what the parent is trying to impose offering isn't actually helpful. At All.

And one has to divert energy from dealing with the actual crisis to dealing with the "helpful" person.

I know the caseloads are grim, and I have enormous respect for anyone who does this job well, but surely there's something wrong when the family are having to make allowances for the poor fragile social worker, not the other way round?

Report
Marjoriew · 13/12/2010 15:28

Exactly, Resolution.
All the helping agencies' budgets are overstretched.
Social services get such bad press, but you rarely hear mentioned the good work they do.

Report
WestVirginia · 13/12/2010 15:31

The good work they may do is very rare.

social services waste so much money.

Report
WestVirginia · 13/12/2010 15:31

The voluntary sector gives much better value for money than Social Services.

Report
Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:34

Of course they do. They're free. Durrr.

Report
WestVirginia · 13/12/2010 15:36

Resolution. That answer simply displays your lack of knowledge.

Report
Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:38

And in your posts you have demonstrated what? A willingness to screw up MissKeg's family with quite frankly appaling advice?

Report
WestVirginia · 13/12/2010 15:41

My advice to the Original Poster is to ask her HV and her GP to explain what information they have given to the Social Worker, and to ask them how they justify any disclosures they may have made.

WV/LC gets satisfaction from derailing threads, Resolution. He has had his parenting skills questioned by Social Services in the past and sees that as justification for dishing out dangerous advice.

Report
Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:44

No it wasn't:

"Ask your GP not to tell Social Workers anything about your Private Medical records."

You advised her not to cooperate. That is the appaling advice.

Report
WestVirginia · 13/12/2010 15:49

Never ask Social services for help. They are usually incompetent.

scurryfunge, please stop telling lies.

Report
Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:55

I've heard all about that. You'd think someone would try and help others not make the same mistakes as them.

Report
Resolution · 13/12/2010 15:58

The above mas meant for scurryfunge, by the way.

Report
scurryfunge · 13/12/2010 15:59

No lies here, LC.

Report
scurryfunge · 13/12/2010 16:02

Yes, thanks Resolution - as I said, derailing is the motive, not offering good advice to someone who needs it.

LC, if you do not have anything useful to add to the debate, just try to zip it. You do more harm.

Scurrilous scurry, please give details of when SS questioned my parenting skills.

You are unable to do so, because you told lies.

Ooops, yes you have caught me out there -you have developed a near perfect relationship with Social Services through your fantastic attitude.

Parent of the year award, methinks.

Report
MoreCrackThanHarlem · 13/12/2010 16:13

'I do NOT agree that the parents are difficult to deal with.'

Really? You honestly believe that all families with SS involvement are open, honest and willing to take on board the advice they are given?
You are absolutely wrong.
There are many families where the parents are deceitful, manipulative and unconcerned with the needs of their children.

9 of the pupils in my class have various levels of SS involvement, and at least half of these fit the description above.

Report
WestVirginia · 13/12/2010 16:18

Social workers are manipualative and not honest.
They do try to bully people.
Social workers do not listen properly.
Never ask for help from social services.
