There are 60 million people in the uk! I think it's pretty sad that he only got 271,677 signatures. BUT I think he's an absolute superstar for doing what he has and this morning he has gone to Downing Street to be told that school dinners will receive an extra £280million boost, and children will receive 50p per meal. (still doesnt seem much!!)

Good on you Jamie!!!

I very much dislike Ruth Kelly .. saw a wonderfully damning column (can't remember where now) on how she's just not good enough for the job and found myself noddingn along

And the JO programme was recorded over the last 18 months

I hate govt. spin .. they should have done something as soon as they got into power

Gobbledigook · 30/03/2005 13:44

What do you mean you were in the 300's - you mean in the 300 something signature?

RK may be an MP and have 4 kids but she ain't no yummy mummy!

Oooh, I'm feeling evil today - that's lack of sleep for you!

sunnyskies · 30/03/2005 13:49

Jamie Oliver said on the news he got putting al his eggs in one basket - he has a meeting with Tory leader next week to ensure whoever wins the election sorts out the school lunches

sunnyskies · 30/03/2005 13:49

Should be "not putting"

Twiglett · 30/03/2005 14:01

yes I signed the petition before it reached 400

seb1 · 30/03/2005 14:33

Scotland seem to be ahead in having already upped their spending

school meals

marthamoo · 30/03/2005 14:53

I really thought more people would have signed the petition.

Agree that it is blatant electioneering for the government to suddenly 'find' this extra funding but bloody good on Jamie O for getting this subject to the forefront of the political agenda.

Tinker · 30/03/2005 16:54

Think I was in the 200s [even smugger emoticon]

bea · 31/03/2005 14:56

pooh! and i was all smug cos i was in the 500's!!!

FIMAC1 · 31/03/2005 15:35

321 me

wordsmith · 31/03/2005 15:43

Jamie Oliver was not the first

Still think he deserves a knighthood though. And so does his wife for living with him.

Enid · 31/03/2005 15:51

fgs, maybe they are electioneering but at least they have responded to something which a lot of ordinary people have asked for. What would everyone be saying if they had given no response at all to the tv show or the petition? At least they are doing SOMETHING!!

muminlondon · 01/04/2005 14:39

Anyone else surprised by the story in the Independent today that Jamie Oliver may be the next Tory MP for Arundel?

Or is it just a sick April Fool story ??!!

Tinker · 01/04/2005 14:51

Um, am prety sure it's an April Fool joke. I did for a few seconds though

muminlondon · 01/04/2005 14:58

I only realised when I searched the Independent website for a link and couldn't find the story.

Gwenick · 01/04/2005 15:00

re the number of people that signed it.

a) yes there are 60 million people in the UK but many of those are children and pensioners

b) 'most' parents are in a two person relationship so chances are only ONE person from each family would have signed

c) Not everyone has internet access, or would have watched the programme - I didn't watch the programme for one

d) If you haven't got kids at school, or you have children at a school where good school meals are already provided where is the incentive to sign it

muminlondon · 01/04/2005 15:31

have you heard of any petitions with more signatures than that? There was a link on the site to official guidelines on petition (the JO site didn't collect addresses but it looks like the government still accepted it) and the nearest one in size was 83,000 signatures against licensing for live music.
here

muminlondon · 01/04/2005 15:31

guidelines on electronic petitions I mean
