Looks like an attempt to bomb Glasgow airport has been disrupted.
Where next?

Well said Peachy, These women have been in my thoughts as well

I feel extreme sympathy for Muslim women at the moment- it must be scary to be a normal peaceable person going about your business knowinga few uneducated prats have you amrked out as a Terrorist because of an item of clothing. Normal Muslims are just as much victims of this (and the peope inside the airport could have been anybody- Muslim included) as anyone, in many ways more so.

Apart from 2 M-Netters I know wear the Hijab pretty much anyone we talk to on here could, these sites are one of societies great equalisers. And I really hope that all the Muslim netters out there have a peaceable week with no troubble from this

And whilst Tony Blair has obviously made the cock up of the century in invading Iraq, the fact is that hundreds of people are dying in Iraq everyday because Sunnis blow up Shias and vice versa, not because British troops are doing so.

We should pull our troops out now and leave them to it.

I think if I was a Muslim woman, I definitely wouldn't be wearing the hijab right now, it'd just inflame non-muslims' fury even more.

i doubt i'd have the presence of mind to do anything other than gawp uselessly.

That would have been my first thought. I'd have run away as fast I could despite this guy burning away because I'd assume he had a device on him.

Shame, but hey, that honestly would have been the first thought to cross my mind.

oh my god..he had a suicide belt and its linked to the London bombings

Report
binkleandflip · 30/06/2007 22:05

Now it transpires the guy in the hospital had a device on him - thankfully they found that out before he blew the hospital away. They should have just left him to smoulder on the pavement.

i'm more of the 'if there's a bomb with your name on it...' school. however am always conscious of the paul merton gag about his worried neighbours Mr and Mrs Doodlebug.

Not sure about them being undefeatable - we managed to defeat the Japanese in WWII (albeit using the bomb and therefore having to resort to fairly drastic measures) and they were reasonably keen on 'honour' and sacrificing themselves for their beliefs.

Now don't ask me how we defeat this particular brand of suicide bomber but let's be positive as being pessimistic definitely won't get us anywhere. Best we can do for now is get on with our lives as normally as possible.

I had a wobbly moment last August when we were due to fly to the States just after the whole palaver re flights being targeted. In the end, after a lot of soul searching, we went and I'm so glad we didn't let the bastards stop us.

Tonight DH is out in London for a friend's 30th. Not saying I'm that keen he's out but I sure as hell wasn't going to tell him not to go as that would have been giving in. Doesn't stop me worrying of course...

So many thoughts in my head on this and impossible to write them down without sounding like a loon or stupid!

I hope that everything turns out okay, it is getting a bit scary.

The same applies to them, aitch, (the perpetrators of guantanamo bay human rights travesties I mean not the captives). I know they believe they are true muslims and I don't know how you deal with them UCM, I truly despair that I brought my child into this wretched world sometimes because it's only going to get worse as long as people (of many different religions) believe that this is what faith means

who knows, UCM? that's the difficult bit. of course we don't yet know who is responsible for the glasgow incident, or what actually happened.

Report
Aitch · 30/06/2007 21:14

you should speak to the wives and children of some of the men kidnapped and taken to guantanamo and kept there is disgusting conditions without hope of trial, binkle. america, and by implication our govt, does already treat people this way... whether they do it in syria or not.

Report
UCM · 30/06/2007 21:14

But THEY think they are true muslims! There are lots of 'them' out there and not for one minute do any of these people think they are 'psycopaths'. They truly believe that the way they are going to act is right. How on earth do you begin to deal with this?

binkleandflip · 30/06/2007 21:11

I am so bitter and angry about this. As long as they don't mind dying, we should make it a good long drawn out experience for them. I swear to god, I would happily put them in with a few impounded pit bulls at the police cells right now. I know that kind of talk doesnt help and isnt particularly rational, but I feel very emotional about this tonight. Obviously, these people aren't true muslims. They make me sick, vile, vile human beings.

Same here chipkid, my dh is flying from heathrow tomorrow aft to Lyon, and I am feeling very nervous - but i have packed him a few sarnies (just in case of delays) and keeping my fingers crossed i really dont want him to go but life has to go on!

bombs in london when brown takes over, and in glasgow when queen at scottish parly so police attention elsewhere.

now, here's controversial...

i never understand why people are so at suicide bombers, really. we all know there are abnormally egotistical people around who are vulnerable to being manipulated by others. i swear i'm not tring to be tasteless, but for example, why do people keep goiing on Big Brother? because they aren't quite right in the head and because they feel they'll be the ones to get the big pay-off in the end, despite all existing evidence to the contrary.

i'm sure that there are vulnerable men and women who are equally manipulated by people who twist Islam in a hateful manner.
of course people on bb aren't killing themselves, but if you utterly believe in an afterife nor is a suicide, in a way. i just don't believe you can be right in the head and behave in this way. it's terrible, because an enemy who doesn't mind dying can't be defeated, really.

anyway, let's just say a prayer, i suppose, that everyone keeps safe. and alan johnston, the poor man.

chipkid, tomorrow will probably be the safest day you could ever be at heathrow or any airport for that matter
