I was amazed to learn that she got pregnant with her first child age 12, and had her second age 14 - and still went on to start her singing career as a teenager. She must have had such a tough time. Incredible lady.

I liked all her work, but there's one sublime song that she sang with her younger sister, Carolyn who died 30 yrs ago, called "Walk Around Heaven. I have it as a single.

After the bows at Les Mis in London and the US last night they played Aretha singing ‘I dreamed a dream’ after an announcement to the audience. This version gives me goose pimples.

Amazing voice. People have been watching her performance of Natural Woman honouring Carole King in 2015 but I just watched her duet of Ooh Baby with Smokey Robinson - sublime. Not a powerhouse performance but you hear the beauty of her voice.

No one will be surprised to hear that Obama's successor was not able to match that. Came out with some garbage about knowing Aretha very well (really?) and how she had 'worked for him' many times. What an insult.

Thank goodness Obama is still able to speak publicly like this in spite of not being president. A decent tribute is needed.

RIP Aretha. Her absolute command of a song was incredible.

Barack Obama's tribute to Aretha:

America has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father’s congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.

Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.
