Girl in Magaluf giving oral sex to 24 men for free drink

We we were talking about this at work today, and the majority verdict was that this girl is a slapper and will do anything for a free drink.
This may well be true.
However, I was trying to make a point about the objectification of women and how this would never happen the other way around. I couldn't explain myself properly and ended up looking an idiot Blush
Can someone help me explain what I mean.
Maybe this should be in Feminist Chat?

"Let's imagine a similar story. 18-30 holiday, bloke offered several litres if beer if he can get 30 girls to let him suck their nipples..."

Have you read today's Daily Mail?
All restraint has been removed by our society which pushes pop videos and Hollywood movies which glorify excess and remove restraint.

"I watched five girls aged 18 to 22 from Hull drunkenly walk up and down the strip at 2am, pulling up their T-shirts to bare their breasts.

Short of money, they were offering boys the chance to suck their nipples in exchange for a couple of euros.

One of them, a well-spoken, dark-haired teenager called Jessica who had just left school after taking her A-levels and was heading for university, told me as she sat on a wall at the end of Punta Balena: ‘It seems a good way to get a bit of extra money for the holiday spend.

‘We have all had a bit to drink. I realise you could call it “minor prostitution”. If our parents found out, they’d go mad.’

People seem to do it all the time now, it's an obsession. There was a woman giving birth in the street the other day (saw it in paper) and people were filming her, I mean what is wrong with them? It's frightening how quickly camera phones and social media have made people lose all sense of decency.

It's not just a question of consent for the sex acts, though, it's also a question of consent for the thing being filmed and shared around. I cannot believe she consented to that, in any way shape or form.

What do you think would happen?

Facebook friend posted about this saying girl and her parents are disgusting and should be ashamed. I don't ever argue on internet fora so sat on my hands rather than post on the men, bars and holiday reps involved in this awful exploitation. And the dreadful behaviour of the people who filmed and posted this on line for us all to judge. Poor girl

God - just so much is wrong with this story. I went on a couple of these types of holidays when I was a teenager and I know that they are about getting drunk and pulling. This is just a whole other level of sordidness though. When I went to Magalluf in the early 90s, my friend was assaulted and raped. I wonder that if this kind of stuff is going on in public in Magalluf, what is going on in the alleyways and on the beach at night?

This 18 year old girl, who comes from a good Christian family in N Ireland, is now going to have her life ruined because of the greed of Carnage Magalluf and that awful man Alan Collinson. I find it sick that everyone in that room allowed her to be pressured into doing that.

I agree about the influence of porn and just thank god that I am not a young girl now. If any of my 3 DSs were involved in something like this, I would be ashamed of them.

MamaPain even if you were right in saying it was all just wild, youthful, in the moment behaviour. It doesn't make the decision to demonise her on the front page of the sun any less misoginistic.

However, I disagree that it was just wild behaviour and nothing else. There are so many issues in our male dominated, porn obsessed and female as objects society that helped facilitate what happened.

According to the mirror the girls parents are born again Christians and they have 'forgiven' her.

4 men? Do you mean 24 men? Fortunately for many of them they haven't been identified and if they have privately their actual names haven't been dragged through the mud online. The only names to my knowledge that partook in this disgusting "game" that have been published are the girls and the reps.

My DS was telling us about this story earlier. Seems shocking to me but he and his friends seemed to think this kind of thing is quite common on this sort of holiday. They could come up with quite a few other stories they've heard of similar incidents but that haven't been as publicised. Having seen some of the things on BBC3/Channel 4 about these holidays, I can believe them.

Personally I think part of the problem isn't necessarily related to misogyny but how our culture fetishes youth, extremism and this sort of hedonistic existence, that classic claim of sex, drugs etc. In the majority that's limited for most to a functioning level by school/work/home responsibilities and boundaries but when they go off on these holidays everything goes. Kids all egg each other on to go wild, and to (shamefully) paraphrase One Direction, live while they're young.

That being said societal pressures aside I don't think you can apportion responsibility to everyone else but the girl. Blame does lie with the men, and bystanders, but she did those things, not forced and regardless of whether it was for a holiday, it's shortsighted behaviour. She may have been drunk but she wasn't that drunk and that's part of drinking, accepting the choices you amy make as a result. Her and presumably her friends all seemed to think it was a big laugh at the time, Unlucky for her it was filmed.

No of course not but I think most prostitutes would be sensible enough to take the money up front! I doubt many women would have chosen that life but they usually forced into it by a more urgent reason than the prospect of a free holiday.

I don't know why you think I'm saying it's ok or expected for men to lie or cheat to get sex. Men like that repulse me and I would die of shame if a son of mine treated women like that, but it has to be said some women do seem to make it easy for such creeps by being so willing to have sex with complete strangers.

Yes it's wrong that she was lied to/misled, I never said it wasn't, but she has to bear some responsibility. All the men were vile, no question, but you still can't call it assault.

The 4 men sound like arseholes. Wonder if their parents are proud?

Wish half the interest in slapping down this girl on social media could be generated in the lost Leon Brittan dossier. Not that the magaluf story and the depressing lens on this vile male culture isn't worth discussion but why is it front page news in place of this story?

Pixel by your logic it would be OK for men to have sex with prostitutes and then not pay them. Is that what you think?

Report

It's not beside the point at all Confused

It's just a different point to the one you are interested in.

Oh 7 I think your post here "there probably is an argument to say it was abuse or assault of some sort, technically, she consented to sexual activity under certain conditions, she was mislead, these conditions were not met - so technically her consent is not valid/withdrawn" sort of explains why that particular aspect of this horrified me.

I find it really disturbing that anyone does not see that as an issue. Is it because men are "expected" to lie and cheat and do whatever they want in order to get women to do what they want sexually? Which I would have thought was obviously a terrible state of affairs that needs changing - it is not acceptable for men to "get" women to do what they want sexually by lying and manipulating. But quite a number of people on this thread seem to have no problem with that and I find it really disturbing.

I wonder if it was a different "sort" of woman, a different situation, a different sex act that was involved whether people would see it differently. I am suspecting the answer is yes.

Report
Pixel · 04/07/2014 23:02

She was manipulated/tricked into performing a sex act on a bunch of men. She was told she would get something in return, which she hasn't got.

Whether she got it or not is rather beside the point isn't it? The point is selling sex in return for something is prostitution plain and simple and she was willing to put herself forward for that. How many people would even consider doing such a vile thing even if it was for a holiday?

As for the rep, he certainly doesn't come out of it smelling of roses, but from what I've seen of these 18-30 type holidays on tv documentaries and suchlike, the humiliating sex games seem to be expected as part of the package. There seems to be no shortage of people willing to join in so I suppose the reps can get carried away with it all. I wonder what sort of turnover they have with the reps. Do they all go to work there knowing they are going to be involved in this stuff or do some arrive thinking they will get paid to arrange coach tours and find lost property and then get a terrible shock?

7Days I totally agree with that too. It's now been established as cool/expected for young women to prioritise sexualising themselves for men's pleasure, but with their own coming a long way down the list, if it features at all. Depressing.

It's all quite boring though which is confusing. I was expecting haranguing and arguing and all these lawyer threats.

There is a massive difference between being pissed and stupid and this though. I just can't believe nobody stopped her. If that was a friend of mine she'd have been dragged out of there, kicking and screaming if need be.
