Cleaner tipped dirty mop water all over living room carpet - can't get rid of the stink - help!

CointreauVersial · 27/06/2016 23:04

For the second time, our cleaner has lost her footing walking through the living room with the mop bucket (there is a step down). This time, it has made the whole room whiff, and I can't get rid of the smell. Like old socks.

I've tried carpet shampoo and Febreze, but nothing has worked.

Any ideas??

I am using vinegar and then baking soda to remove pet urine smell from my carpet. Did you try this?
You first spray the vinegar (white!), blot with kitchen paper, then put baking soda for few hours, then vacuum. Was first doing this for mattress, turned out it works for carpet too - see it here step by step howtocleanstains.com/mattress-cleaning

But it's really bad if the carpet is wool-based - wool gets destroyed if soaked in water

Sodium bicarbonate, cheap as chips sprinkle it on leave overnight, ideally get the carpet as dry as you can first. I got a puppy last year when she was house trained, I shampood the carpet with my home machine, thought it was dry, had exactly the same smell, and found this on a puppy forum. You can buy a machine for around the hundred quid. I had a new rug she peed on, cant get the "pee" smell out, local dry cleaners want £70 to clean it, didnt pay that for the rug, waiting for some warm weather it will go outside, get shampood and then the sodium bicarb treament!

It was a Vax of some kind, OP.

From experience I would say put some white vinegar in a bowl and leave overnight.

EmNetta, I'm not sure about you but I'm surprised people still use water for mopping. If only there was a gadget..... Grin.

EmNetta - our cleaner is very old-style and specifically asked me to buy her a mop and bucket. Personally I hate them, but she's the one doing the cleaning!

She wrote me such an apologetic note today - she is so mortified, poor love. The smell is slowly fading as it dries off; fingers crossed the Zoflora did the trick.

I didn't know people still used buckets of water to mop floors - you can get a gadget which uses something like a handkerchief-sized damp and disposable cloth from a packet to push round the hard flooring, and is really a big improvement; no more accidents with water.
Hope your carpet recovers well.

I would use a Vax. It will suck up wet now and then use the shampoo. I think you can hire them.
Just check an area first and check if it is pure wool as it might shrink. Don't use hot water if it is wool as it will felt and shrink it.

I can't really pull the carpet up - it's right in the middle of a very big room.

The Zoflora seems to have got rid of a lot of the smell, but it will need a couple of days to dry out before I will know for sure. The whole thing could probably do with a good clean, to be honest.

The cleaner is here again tomorrow, and I shall write her a little note suggesting new strategies for bucket-emptying i.e. not all over my living room carpet!

I didn't think it was bad for someone to come and clean a 2 bed flat. It was a big industrial machine connected to a van outside. Smelled lemony fresh afterwardsSmile

Jeez Dame, £100 for one hire. That's awfully expensive.
The machine I bought was only £90 and I get to use it as much as I want. Plus after seeing how much it gets up the first time I wouldn't want someone else to see that. I'd be way too embarrassed.

House contents insurance for carpet?

I would pull it up so the under lay gets dry too.

I wouldn't buy a machine,I might hire a professional though- recently paid £100 for a 2 bed flat.

Have scrubbed with lavish amounts of Zoflora; the room smells like a lavender meadow right now! Will see how it dries off.

Ooh yes, I do have some Zoflora, and I agree the smell is amazing. I hadn't thought of that. As long as it doesn't bleach....

There's no mark anymore, just the smell.

Will have a go and report back.
