Lighthearted: Can you peel around a carrot in less than 8 strokes using one of these?

In my constant quest for ergonomics in the house (more like doing the minimum), I've come up against a problem. No matter what size, it takes me between 9 and 13 strokes of this knife

Damn you, now I'll be counting strokes every single time I peel a carrot.

I suppose if you want less strokes you have to cut more deeply in, but a curved blade might help.

We need to test one of these against the common straight peeler.

Sadly unavailable.

Also, don't ask why it's Amazon Canada. I just searched for curved peelers.

I have this one which is half way between a Y peeler and a swivel knife. It was a lucky find by DH and I will use it if my combi-knives are in the dishwasher.
It looks like curved blades are the way to go, though...

My limited research of two carrots gives an average of 12.5, with a range of 12-13, using a Y peeler.

I'll add that to the spreadsheet, too. Off to bed now...

Since changing to the Y-shaped peeler (pictured on P1) about 4 years ago, I am STUNNED, I tell you, just stunned, how superior it is to the one I'd used for donkeys years (as pictured in the OP).
I use it for carrots, spuds, apples and it is revolutionary.
OP - step right away from that old fashioned on and you will be marvelled by the Y-shape one.
Peel (and wastage) SO much thinner. Job done SO much quicker.

Can I just make it clear? Picture 1 is a swivel peeler (same blade as a Y peeler) with a hollow handle to protect a knife blade. You can see it better in the third picture with the green rectangle.

My photography seems to have led people astray...

(Bumping on a Sunday!)

Some people peel, some don't. Whatever floats your boat.
Personally I do because we eat 80% of our carrots raw and there isn't the sterilisation process that comes with boiling.

So, anybody interested in joining the research to cheer up their Sunday lunch preparation?

indeed - but if you're looking for complete carrot peeling efficiency - don't peel :P

I never peel them raw or otherwise - never felt the need to "sterilise" a carrot Grin

00100001 Is that efficiency or refusal? Smile

I'm surprised. I'd have thought you'd have written a programme to calculate the minimum number of strokes vs the type of peeler. And what would work best.
Regardless of whether you peel them or not.

I have a peeler like the one in your OP (but not a swiveler ) - I can honestly say a cotton bud would be more effective.

I am going to blatantly disregard your instruction and suggest a small stiff brush, because I honestly believe you will thank me.

Maybe it doesn't count as peeling efficiency as no peeling is occurring.... Confused

Why do you need to tell us to be light hearted?
are you worried we might get angry over carrots?

This is MN. People will manage to get angry over carrots. Wink

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I do struggle to peel a potato with a Y peeler without skinning myself.

Also, why are you peeling the top and bottom separately?

Report
Lweji · 27/09/2015 14:17

I prefer knives for potatoes.

I think it's a problem with the peeler. With the Y peeler it's possible to go top to bottom, but you may be less able to control it with the straight one.
