Lighthearted: Can you peel around a carrot in less than 8 strokes using one of these?

In my constant quest for ergonomics in the house (more like doing the minimum), I've come up against a problem. No matter what size, it takes me between 9 and 13 strokes of this knife

Oh I see, it had not occured to that it was a thing to wash carrots after peeling them, hence my misunderstanding.

I peel mine over the bin all in one stroke towards me and the peel drops into the bin. All clean.

I thought everybody scrubbed carrots using a designated nail brush ..... My Y-peeler is just for old potatoes (new potatoes have another small scrubber which looks like half-a-potato, been unable to find one orange-coloured for the carrots)

I was helping out with some catering once - I was laboriously peeling carrots with a straight peeler like the OP - the chef grabbed the carrot from me and picked up a Y peeler, saying "No! like this!" and peeled the carrot in about 10 seconds. I use a cheap plastic Y peeler ideally with a carbon steel blade not stainless, they're sharper. Lakeland used to do one for about £2 here

Hard to describe technique but it's super fast.

Um, yes I wash raw carrots after they're peeled.

I used the word "sterilisation" to mean any 100 degree+ cooking process (boil, roast, stew, steam... ) which as well as tenderising the carrots kills organisms which may have come from the soil residue and/or skin.

As I said above, whatever floats your boat, but the fewer dead micro-organisms floating in my soup the better IMO.

Um, peeling does not sterilise the carrots, if you want to clean them, you still need to wash them. Imagine if they were full of mud, you'd smear the carrot while peeling it. Them same applies to the things you can't see.

After a year of being on MN I still can't do direct links to single web pages, sorry!

If you go to Youtube and search for "Rebecca Brand How to peel and chop carrots" she does it the same way as me, peeling half at a time and shooting the peel directly into the bin. Quick, safe and clean.

The DC now think I'm mad for offering them carrot 5 minutes before tea.

Oxo good grip y shaped peeler. Thick carrot. 9 full length strokes. Why are you doing half lengths?

Fixed blade definitely isn't popular. Sad

It's a sad state of affairs when you can buy a "carrot sharpener" from John Lewis but not a decent fixed blade peeler (well they have one on the website, but it has poor reviews and is out of stock).

The blog I liked best was //www.thesweethome.com search "the best swivel peelers" and here's the Amazon favourite.

Can anybody help with fixed blades?

It just so happers...
As part of my research for this thread, I looked up some blogs.

The OXO Good Grips Y shaped and swivel knife (about 18 dollars, it was an American blog) both got excellent reviews but Amazon reviewers prefer a 4 dollar plastic one with a German name. I'll see if I can find it.
All swivel, however.

I haven't come across many fixed blade peelers apart from the string handled Lancashire peeler which my DM wields with abandon and I get about 3cm from!

Ooo - a peeling thread! Can anyone recommend a peeling knife with a fixed blade AND a sharp edge to it?

I had no idea how difficult it would be to find one until I tried to find a peeler to go camping with. After repeatedly forgetting to pack sharp knives/chopping board/peeler etc, I decided that I needed a box of things just for camping - all easily sorted with the exception of a peeler!

After years of using my trusty fixed-blade peeler it turns out that I can't stand peeling with a Y-shaped peeler or any peeler with a swivel-blade. Over the last 3 years I've bought at least 6 peelers and hated every one of them. Sad I got quite excited about the last one I bought - fixed-blade, nice handle, not ridiculously expensive - only to find the blade is so blunt that I might as well be peeling with a spoon.

Maybe I'm expecting too much to be able to own two decent peelers...

I can do just one stroke if I start at the top and spiral round the carrot. :)

It takes longer though.

doesn't peel potatoes either

Lweji · 27/09/2015 14:17

I prefer knives for potatoes.

I think it's a problem with the peeler. With the Y peeler it's possible to go top to bottom, but you may be less able to control it with the straight one.

MsJuniper · 27/09/2015 14:12

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I do struggle to peel a potato with a Y peeler without skinning myself.

Also, why are you peeling the top and bottom separately?

are you worried we might get angry over carrots?

Maybe it doesn't count as peeling efficiency as no peeling is occurring.... Confused

I have a peeler like the one in your OP (but not a swiveler ) - I can honestly say a cotton bud would be more effective.

I am going to blatantly disregard your instruction and suggest a small stiff brush, because I honestly believe you will thank me.

Lweji · 27/09/2015 11:15

I'm surprised. I'd have thought you'd have written a programme to calculate the minimum number of strokes vs the type of peeler. And what would work best.
Regardless of whether you peel them or not.
