Help me style my lounge

I have decorated each of the rooms in my house and I love the way they feel, except for the lounge. I have decorated this room but it just doesn’t feel right. It is quite dark because of the dark floor and it doesn’t get the sun until the late afternoon/evening.

Could you help me work out why it doesn’t feel right?

I’m planning on putting up some framed prints behind the sofa instead of the colourful canvas and I’m going to get some new cushions in a neutral colour. The wall with the fireplace just doesn’t seem to fit with the room.

The rug was a temporary fix to see if it brightened the room up instead of the dark floor. I’m considering changing it to a white/neutral one?

TIA

Hi there 👋🏻 trying to decorate my living room and having difficulty with one wall in my living room! See pic attached - the door is in the corner and opens into the room so I don't know where is best to put the tv, pictures, cabinet (?) or shelves (?). The tv defo has to be there somewhere. Just wanted to know if anyone else has a layout similar and what has worked for you? Pics would be very helpful!

I really like the room! I like your wallpaper in the alcoves. I think maybe a statement lamp would help add a feature and soft warm light in the evenings to detract from the ceiling light. Something like this from Wayfair:

secure.img1-ag.wfcdn.com/im/25966297/resize-h800-w800%5Ecompr-r85/1143/114347253/Bonita+174cm+Arched+Floor+Lamp.jpg

Also, you could maybe look at tiling over the inner part of the fireplace (the marble part?) with more modern dark grey tiles.

I would keep the wallpaper, it's lovely.

Looking at that most recent photo I think the wall colour is too cold. A v v pale pink or dusty colour would be lovely against your grey sofa. Say peig noir by farrow and ball. That would go with your jute rug and even the mirror but it wouldn't go with your wallpaper. It would make the room much more cosy. At the moment it's too austere.

Thank you for all the comments. I need to go through them all and mags a list of what I plan to change.

I have ordered some bigger cushions for the sofa in neutral colours with pops of blue. Hopefully it will brighten up the dark sofas. I’ll also get a throw to soften the sofas.

I’m going to get some prints to go behind the sofa which are wider or as wide as the sofa. Should I do a collage wall of say 5 or 7 different sized prints or 3 large portrait prints in a line?

I used to have navy curtains hung up but I found that they made the room even darker. I’m going to look for some lighter ones.

I’m looking at new lamps or at least a bigger lamp shade.

I’m going to get a round mirror for over the fireplace. And I’ve bought some decorative pieces to style the fireplace like plants and candles.

I can’t get rid of the fireplace yet so I’m thinking of painting the silver bit black. What do you think?

I do like the wallpaper so I’m going to style the room first and then see if I can get away with keeping it or see if it needs to go.

The person who asked about the squiggly black lines on the windowsill - I just drew on the picture to remove the car number plates Grin.

Also I could only add 3 pictures do here is the last picture of the last wall.

I’ll keep you updated with the changes.

Thanks everyone.

I like the wallpaper. I think you need a rectangular picture behind the sofa.

There are a lot of round cushions in the shops at the moment, that might help with your angular situation. https://www.dunelm.com/product/holly-willoughby-lexi-blue-velvet-round-cushion-1000159741?defaultSkuId=30676845

I quite like it but then I do like dark rooms and loathe beige on beige which many "bright" sitting rooms are.
I'd paint the chimney breast in a darker colour picked out from the wall paper. I like the wallpaper.
Maybe pick out the gold more. A big golden plant pot for example. Grey/ navy and gold is a good combination. Maybe some bolder more "Goldy " cushions.
And get rid of the curtain pole if your not using it.

I think that it's too cold at the moment with the light youve got.

I like the rug and accessories and would warm up the wall colour ? A pale sandy colour but not too yellow

I would have a round silver mirror or a piece of really bright artwork on the breast and then a very bright rug like this

I think a bit more colour, dotted around the room. Like in the photo @Celledora posted, the chair at the back, cushion at the side and again in the foreground is blue, the eye can be drawn towards it and flows around the room.
I tend to use 3 colours in a room, 2 main ones and then a highlight.

Love the rug- keep that if you do not carpet the floor,
I prefer light walls than dark in a darker room, I would ditch the wallpaper
Angled cushions are so dated looking go for the advice to soften with feminine accessories. Many colour compliment grey.
The picture needs replaced with a larger piece or a collection of photos
Mirror does not quite fit I'd look at other suggestions as I have nothing on my walls still!

Layered textures and varying tones of the same colour.

What are the squiggly black things on the window ledge. They look ace

I’d be tempted to swap the rug for a navy rug, change the cushions to mix of navy & gold (some patterned) and get some navy curtains. Pick photos with blues and gold undertones.

The fire. I’d save and replace properly with a hole in the wall type.

I like the rug, the dark floors, the sofa

The gold mirror would sit better if you had other elements of gold in the room. Gold looks nice against navy and navy is very fashionable at the moment.

Lovely room with nice proportions. Love your big plant too!

Keep the wallpaper. It's great. It's interesting and gives the room personality
Previous poster's suggestion of painting chimney breast wall a complementary colour is a good one.

The dark grey furniture is very gloomy and oppressive looking.

I really don't like the rug, looks like a potato sack.

Fireplace looks very dated but appreciate not a quick/easy thing to change.

Mirror isn't great either. V old fashioned.

Standing lamp looks a bit small and plain. A more interesting metallic one would look good.

I would get rid of the wallpaper to be honest. I think it would make a huge difference to the lightness of the space and it doesn't go with the fireplace.

The mirror looks out 0f place. Heirloom or not, its old fashioned. You can get some lovely mirrors online from suggestions above

I like @Daisydoesnt suggestions. I find the room doesn't hang together well, particularly the fireplace wall. I would start by getting rid of the wallpaper, it doesn't go with anything in the room.

I think it just needs more colour. It looks a bit austere. Big colourful cushions? The rug is nice, the picture is hung too high and the fireplace is hideous, but I don’t think there is much you can do about that. Any thoughts on ripping it out?

I really like the wallpaper and the chimney breast would look good painted a darker colour - to tone with one of the wallpaper colours. I think the mirror would then blend in better.

The chair by the window looks a bit odd by itself, but I can see why it's there.

Maybe group the items on the fireplan a little more, so they are not just single objects.

I don't agree with the previous poster who suggested covering the footstool in knick knacks. It's a practical item not a display area for 'stuff'.

I like it all, you have a good eye. The artwork above the sofa needs to wider though and hung lower.

Love the wall paper, the mirror is nice but a different style to the rest of the room.

I'm not so keen on the grey walls or the style and colour of the sofa and chair. It's quite a lot of dark furniture. A warmer colour on the walls and a rounded, colourful chair facing the centre of the room?

Report
startpraying · 05/06/2020 23:59

I think it would be lovely with a deeper / richer colour on the walls. Like a lovely deep farrow and ball type colour.

I think it's a lovely room, as pp have suggested maybe paint your chimney breast a darker colour picked out from the wall paper? Other than that, maybe switch your cushions up a bit - think about patterns and textures.
