Do you put shelves (nook in side of fireplace) up BEFORE or after wallpapering?

If it's wallpapered first the carpenter will have to be mega careful not to mark the wallpaper Confused

But if they shelve first then it will be bloody difficult to wallpaper Confused

Shelves after decorating, regardless of whether painting or papering.

You'll need a different paint for walls and shelves, ei wall paint and wood paint. I'd do the wall before putting the shelves up.

Ooh, completely thread hijacking, but what about same scenario but painting?

Am planning on putting built in shelving in alcoves either side of chimney breast and painting both shelves and walls the same colour so it all looks seamless.

I think shelves up before painting all in one go, DP thinks paint walls then paint shelves then put painted shelves up.

Fantastic, thanks. Very heavily patterned wallpaper.

I've always done things like shelves, pictures etc after wallpapering. A decent carpenter/handyman (or woman) won't have any problem Smile

If you're using a pattern, definitely wallpaper first as matching it would be a nightmare.
