English and Maths joint degrees?

DD is in yearv12 and loves English and Maths and is good at both (predicted grades Bs and As). She wants to do a joint degree in English and Maths- does such a degree even exist at a decent university? If not what other degrees might be good?

She has no idea what she wants to do in terms of a future career except maybe journalism but is adamant she does not want to work in business, finance or teaching.

Her other AS subjects are graphic products and psychology the latter of which she loathes so will most likely drop.

Anyone got any pearls of wisdom?

She could also look at Liberal Arts? I know Birmingham offers it nowadays.

Kritur - you are correct, but Manchester Met is not. I see why you might have been confused though - I did refer to uni of Manchester later in the post (without, perhaps, making it adequately clear)

Try Keele. They pioneered the joint honours system & also allow unusual combinations as well as useful subsidiaries.

But Manchester Metropolitan (Met) is not. It does seem a slightly unusual combination. I'd also look at grade expectations for the courses. Not sure I'd even consider Math at university level without a string of As.

If it was either one or the other, I would say go for a maths degree, it carries a lot of weight. She can always keep up her interest in literature outside the lecture hall.

I've just had a look at UCAS course search (a gem if ever there was one; make sure you set it to 2014 entry or it won't show everything). It's an unusual combination, and the only unis doing English and Maths degrees are Glasgow, Bishop Grosseteste, Chester, Derby, Dundee and Manchester Met. Only Glasgow is at 'decent uni' (by which I mean RG / 1994 group; yes I am aware of the limitations of that definition) end of the scale.

If she wants to go into journalism, then one of the most important things for her to do is to get involved with student media - print newspaper, radio, TV etc. Find out what the student media is like, and if you visit an open day during term time then try and get hold of a copy of the paper (if they have one). Not only will you be able to see the quality, you'll be able to get an unfiltered (by the student recruitment dept) snapshot of life at the university. I have rather limited knowledge of student media, but I know that Manchester has an excellent paper (the Mancunion, published weekly), passable radio (Fuse FM) and almost non-existent TV (Fuse TV).
