Should I kick up a fuss or not bother?

DS is is Year 1 (mixed with Y2 class). He's been identified as being at least 2 years ahead in maths - at parent's evening in early Feb his teacher admitted he hadn't learnt anything since the start of the year. He's 'somewhere in KS2' and they've agreed to put in place an IEP to enable him to learn in his current environment.

FIne and dandy - plan was that half his maths time per day was 1 2 1 with the class TA. Really pleased, all going well, due to be reviewed in June.

Well the TA was off sick for the last 3 weeks of last term - it's a really small school so they've been covering here and there. I know during this 3 weeks he had NO 1 2 1 time at all. Go back after Easter and find TA will not be back before Sep - covering arrangements as before.

So, do I ask what they're going to do to continue his IEP, or do I accept they have loads on their plate already and let it go for a term? Part of me thinks, if he's so far ahead does it really matter, it's summer term, just chill. Another part of me thinks, hang on thy've committed to doing this for him and I don't want his time wasted counting in 2's and 5's and practising his number bonds to 10 and 20 when he knows all his times tables and could work out easily number bonds to 1000.

I just can't work out what to do. Maybe have a quiet word? Are they hoping I won't realise?

www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/giftedandtalented/downloads/pdf/provision_g_and_t_primary.pdf I hope this link works - it is a useful dcsf booklet about g and t in primary schools.

Maybe you could ask if he could go up a class for maths - primaries often have numeracy hour at the same time so could he go in with the year 2's? They used to do this in my DD's primary although it was for a group of kids, rather than just one.

tis tough. ds has had 1 year of extension out of 3, so it's a bit hit and miss. i'm inclined to say that if he's in a mixed class, at least they'll be running him with the yr2s in any case, so in effect he's already 'going up' for maths. currently ds1's teacher is using him to teach instead of doing extension work so i'm sort of burying my head in the sand really.

summer term i'd probably choose to let it slide if i'm honest... but i'd make sure his iep is sorted at the beginning of september for next year. and implemented...

They're not mixing him with Y2, despite it being a mixed class - the groups are ability based but strictly within year - this gives him a group of 1!

Also, it is slightly complicated by the fact DD is in Y2, so in the same class. She's a very able girl who lacks confidence, and the teacher is very mindful of not undermining her by putting her brother in the same group, where he would still stand out.

Decided to leave it until the review in June, and in the meantime do some stuff at home he likes to do.

oh golly. at least that won't be an issue next year! (unless they decide to move him up to yr 3 for maths! )

you can't help feel guilty about letting it go for a bit - in october the school called me and asked permission to assess dd1 for some programme or other. it still hasn't happened, and i can't help but think it was some sort of box ticking exercise - oh yes we've 'identified' pupils who might benefit... not done anything about it lol, but we've identified them...
