Reoccurrence after sepsis

So, I have just had a blood borne infection and sepsis, probably from a cannula or a stent in my bile duct. I have also had pancreatitis as a complication of stent placement and severe jaundice from said stent blocking my liver. I came out of hospital just over two weeks ago, was discharged on IV antibiotics which I have finished and my PICC line is out. All my bloods were going in the right direction and cultures clear.
I was on massive doses of opiates throughout this, but had reduced right down to two cocodamol every eight hours or so by last week, maybe with some oramorph after eating in exceptional circumstances.
This week I’m really really sore again, bad abdo pain, waiting to take painkillers. Horrible after I eat. I know if I phone 111 they will say go to a and e but it’s an hour on the train and I’m concerned I’m just imagining things and that actually, it’s probably just me recovering. How likely is it a return of the sepsis? Any one knowledgeable about such things have an idea before I force myself on the train? Thanks in advance

Oh dear. I have an appointment tommorrow. Do you think the slurred speech is indicative of something? I’m sorry you have experience of this I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Please go back to the hospital and get yourself checked out ASAP. This really doesn't sound right and unfortunately I have previous experience with pancreatitis and sepsis together along with the slurred speech. Please go and get yourself checked out again.

Just this horrible red eye and still awful abdo pain. I did have a couple of episodes of slurred speech yesterday, but I’ve had that on and off since being in hospital. I’m just so terrified of being ill again I feel like I’m jumping at shadows. I can’t afford to be ill, I really really can’t. I need to go back to work next week.

Now, I have a bright red eye. No discharge not itchy but sore kind of behind it. They did say the bug I had likes brains, bones, spines, eyes and hearts to settle in. So I’m absolutely terrified again. Going to ring them again tommorrow and go down there. It’s mostly likely conjunctivitis but everything terrifies me at the minute. I can not go back to hospital!

No problem. Glad you phoned 111. Remember they're there for advice so don't even feel like you shouldn't. Hope you recover soon! Thanks

Ah in the time between me reading the thread so far and showering you’ve updated! Glad you’ve double checked and hope things continue okay but as ever if things deteriorate check again!

Agree to be over cautious and call 111 - it’s what they’re there for and I had sepsis exactly a year ago and would have done the same

I did phone 111 and the infectious disease hospital and they both said don’t worry, it’s more likely to be pancreatitis/liver pain than septic abscess. I have an appt this week. Thanks for taking the time to reply

It's better to be over anxious. Hope you got checked out and feeling better

Rosehip, I’m really sorry to hear that. Do you mind me asking how your symptoms presented when it reoccurred? Whilst I was in hospital I had all the usual, fevers, low bp scalded rash, high pulse etc and needed oxygen. Now though it’s just this horrible gnawing abdo pain

Don’t risk it.

My sepsis cams back three times (each time as they minimised the antibiotics) before they realised although they’d fought the infection they hadn’t actually removed the cause, it’d become reinfected etc (was internal so not obvious)

Can you ring the ward you were in for advice?

GeraldineFangedVagine · 26/01/2020 08:35

Thankyou. I know that’s the answer really. I don’t feel ill per se, but they did say and worsening pain anywhere warrants a check in case it’s an abscess forming. I also worry I’m overreacting, as I’ve been anxious recently. I know you are right, I think I just wanted to sound it out before going. Oh well.

The I wouldn't take the risk and just phone 111. They may even send an ambulance
