FFS Tonsilitis - can I get rid of it by Friday without antiobiotics

Suspect I know the answer to this but it's worth a go - have had a look also and seen a few other poor bods have had it recently too, wondered if any of you had any advice on what worked?

Had to leave concert I was in yesterday halfway through, manky swollen tonsil with pus (lovely), hideous fluey aching joints, headache, temperature, thought I was going to faint - am also 8 weeks pregnant and feeling constantly sick anyway

have to go to best friends wedding on Friday and I want to enjoy myself! (and cannot blot out pain with alchohol). Also have to play the clarinet in the service.

I HATE taking antibiotics because most of them make me hurl & they always give me thrush (neither of these ideal when pregnant) and well, aren't you supposed to avoid them if poss when pregnant?

what can I do?

ooooh how nice of you to think of me!

Not feeling nearly so bad, tonsils down a bit, so think it was definitely them warning me I'd been doing way too much over the last 2 weeks. Luckily don't have much to do until the wedding on Friday so am resting and hiding from the sun.

ice cream was very helpful, as was the gargling with TCP

How are you feeling today, Mrs JC?

Oh poor you. The only times I've ever taken tonsilits to the GP, it's been bacterial. I remember merocaine from childhood - taste vile (but that's subjective anyway) but effective.

Won't get rid of the shivers etc, but I'm very prone to throat infections and have tried everything - the best is the simpliest - gargle with tcp, works everytime.

augmentin = barftastic for me unfortunately! And all penicillin/amozycillin no go too. me and antibiotics really aren't the best of friends. once ended up in hospital throwing up blood after penicillin - what joy!

thanks for the link - remember merocaine were good once before.

and thanks JOnes. Ice cream - if only the thought didn't make me feel icky. damn sickness!

I use these when I have tonsilitis

www.allhealth-info.com/shared/product.asp?id=31173&txt=MEROCAINE

Check with your pharmacist to see if you can use them whilst pregnant because the only thing I have seen on the www is this:

"There is no safety information available on the use of this medicine in human pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, it has been widely used for many years without ill consequence. Seek medical advice from your doctor."

Also, I was prescribed Augmentin whilst pregnant so there is a least one antibiotic that you can use during pregnancy.

I gargled soluable paracetamol - you can take that while you're pregnant, can't you?

Also found eating icecream helped (at least that's what I told DH )

oh have just been googling and seems that most tonisillitis is caused by a virus, and so antibiotics are useless. they're only any good if a proper bacterial infection settles in.

its gargling with salt water then for me. barf

Do they give you antibiotics when you're pregnant?

I remember going to the doctor when I was pregnant with DD - had just done a test and it was positive.

I'm sure he didn't give me antibiotics.

I play the oboe, and I had tonsilitis once during a show - remember it really hurt to play - so you have loads of sympathy from me

thank you PC!
I do have a fan, and luckily a DH hanging around to help (Mind you he's lying in front of the fan and I'm in the other room at the moment....)

the thought that it's going to be 34 or something in Wednesday totally horrifies me TBH.

Ok better ring up the doctors at 3.30 and plead for an appointment sometime in the next 10 years

Sorry, didn't give you the sympathy...poor you, I bet you're feeling rough - early pg, tonsilitis and this heat...you need to be mothered. Have you got a nice fan to sit in front of? And lots of sipping ice water (also helps the MS).

Sorry, you won't like to hear this, but - go to the GP. The sooner the better.

AFAIK, nothing shifts genuine tonsilitis other than antibiotics, and if it's affecting the rest of you then it's bad for the baby to leave it untreated.

I mean I've looked on here and seen previous advice. Basically wanted some sympathy as well as advice, hence new thread
