My husband was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. He'd convinced himself he had a vitamin B12 deficiency and asked for a blood test. His blood sugar was about 26 and the GP surgery and local hospital went into a panic!
He's been prescribed Metformin, initially twice a day and now three times a day.
He's not overweight. In fact, he's starting to look pretty skinny, despite having a big build.
I'm finding it really difficult to work out what he should be eating. The big problem is that he's had a chronic stomach complaint (for nearly 20 years now), that we'd just had diagnosed and was being managed. However, he still doesn't like eating during the day, and one of the side effects of the metformin seems to be to give him diarrhea -- which was the major symptom of the stomach problem.
He's getting headaches and just seems wiped out. Ironically, before the diagnosis he felt and looked in the best of health!
What should we do? One of those self-testing kits? What diet? He needs to be built up rather than to lose weight.
