Dinner party for 16 on a budget?!

DP's birthday on Sat, I've said I'll do a big meal for about 16 people. I'm thinking of doing a kind of buffet-style meal as our table is too small to all sit around. We're both really skint and lots of our friends are vegetarian.
Any genius ideas? Thanks very much!

OOOOOOoh baiyu

make lime fizz

Cheap cava or spumante put in a jug with lots of ice and the juice of four/five limes and mix a sprinkle of icing sugar.

I think it's a Nigella recipe and is gorgeous!

Oh that tagine looks good! I did a one day cookery course in Marrakesh a few years ago. I'll go dig out my recipes, have a few salady ones that might complement your tagine.

Costco card? Hmm....I'll get asking around. I think I do need to bake the cake from scratch though, I'm too proud!

I'm not all that concerned about my carpets, I've just started weaning my DS and the carpet needs a shampoo soon anyway!

yes but be prepared to remortgage your house to afford the limes

for 16 on a budget, I'd do aubergine curry, lentil dal, rice or naan with chutneys/yoghurt.
then pineapple.

lol

Yes do make the tagine, it is devine and always goes down well with guests, even carnivores.

I have found cakes turn out just fine using value white flour and value dark chocolate, so they really aren't too costly to make.

10 limes for £1 in my market. If you go at 4pm

I quite agree - tesco value plain choc is about 25p a bar and I've used it in so many puddings, it's really good.
