Things you never knew were vegetarian?

Inspired by a Facebook post I saw today.

I'm a new vegetarian - thought about it for ages and finally made the decision last week. And I'm surprised by all the things I'm finding out are vegetarian! My shockers so far are:

Lidl's budget cheddar cheese
Smiths bacon fries!!!
Chicken pot noodle (not that I would eat one but still surprised!)

What else am I missing out on Cos I don't know it's veggie friendly?

Pesto in the free from range is vegetarian normal ones aren’t.

Most store own brand hard cheese (in place of Parmesan) is suitable for veggies.

Muller corner yoghurts and rice pots are not suitable for vegetarians since they changed their recipe.

Great! Now I can get a sweet treat to go with my vegan sausage roll!

@queenofthetofutree that’s the one!

beef and tomato pot noodle is actually vegan until you add the sachet of ketchup which isn't vegan, unlike most ketchup

What's not vegan about the ketchup? I've just had a look at the ingredients and I can't see anything non vegan listed.

@Ellabella989

Which iced bun in Greggs is vegan? This one?

Eggs and milk aren't listed on the allergen list so I'm guessing it is.

Bisto's beef gravy is vegetarian.

Not only that but it's vegan too!

Just watching food unwrapped goes vegan on c4. Very interesting so far!!

They are just about to make vegan cheese. Looks like it's come a long way since I last tried a vegan cheese.

It's hit and miss, a lot of frozen chocolate cakes aren't veggie for instance but "chicken" pot noodles are! As for cheese, I'm a bad mother - I'm not vegetarian but my dd is and I don't check the packaging, she's 20, she could if she really cared but she loves French cheeses.

I've been veggie for nearly 30 years and remember how hard it used to be, scrutinising labels. My mum refused to do this, so I'd have to make a list of things i fancied and check the shelves after my Saturday shift in Tesco, so i could just give mum a list of what was ok.

I'm now more surprised when i find things that should be, but aren't. And i was chuffed that Sainsbury's meringue shells are made with free range egg.

The vast majority of packet and jar Casserole sauces/mixes for "meat" recipes are veggie.

Most "meat" crisps and corn snacks

"Bacon" bits

Most pot noodle flavours

Most commercially made biscuits and cake.

Increasingly commercially made jellies, trifles, flavoured yogurts and set puddings.

I've been veggie over 30 years and I well remember being VERY limited as many products even bloody bread contained things like lard, gelatine, beef extract etc. This was also prior to the green "v" we now get as a quick indication on products so I remember having to painstakingly not only check ingredients in the immediate aftermath of turning veggie but every time they changed the recipe! Heart used to sink upon seeing the words "new and improved" on my favourite products!

An interesting discovery for me was that corn flakes aren’t vegan because they are enriched with vitamin D, which is derived from wool.

Not all bourbons are vegan. Aldi Belmont aren't (co op, Sainsbury's and Tesco are). Ginger nut biscuits and the Aldi Caramelized biscuits are though...

Yes. I'm veggie and used to really enjoy the meat free Bovril. When it went back to being the beef recipe I was quite upset. I actually rang the Bovril Helpline ( it is a thing!) and they said that they would no longer be making the veggie version. The change back to beef came about because a top chef (quite a famous one, but I forget which) complained that Bovril didn't taste as good as it used to. The story made the papers and Bovril got a lot of publicity about reverting to the original recipe.

Whaaat? My mother was just proudly displaying her meatless bovril (she's veggie) which means that she's had it in the cupboard for about 8 years (not unlikely)...
