Now I remember the last time I had a go at one of these, they were bastards to peel and chop.

Aren't you meant to boil them or something first.

You can chop in half, scoop out the seeds and roast in the skin with a drizzle of oil. Then the flesh scoops out.

I haven't tried boiling them.

I cut in half, scoop out the seeds and then whack in the oven. Then you can scoop out the flesh.

Nearly lost a thumb trying to peel one so I no longer do.

I'm super lazy. Bung in oven and all I do is take off the label! Roast them and then the skin peels off, can cut and deseed them effortlessly!

How long in oven before chopping up?. Can you peel them when they come out?

Neenah, sounds like my kind of thing. How long in oven then?

Stick in hot water if you need to peel raw for 5/10 mins - makes it much easier

orangeandemons · 07/09/2013 18:31

Boiling in a pan water, or just hot water. They are a bit big for my pans

Peel with a potato peeler, works way better than peeling with knife. I cut into chunks and whack in oven with butter and cinnamon. Or boil peeled chunks and mash with butter.

It's to make a risotto, and am pretty clueless tbh. What does it taste like? Not like pumpkin or sweet potato I hope, which are both yukky IMO.

Last time I microwaved it for a few minutes before chopping. Made it loads easier.

Chubfuddler · 07/09/2013 18:47

Tbh it does taste a bit like a cross between sweet potato and pumpkin.

If you're using the oven for whatever you're cooking, then roast the seeds too while it's on - a healthy and tasty snack from something you'd just have thrown out. You can rinse the seeds a lot/little/not at all before roasting depending on how you like them and can fling on salt, pepper or other seasoning as you like.

Or, you can buy butternut squash that's been peeled and chopped into chunks and frozen for you??? That's what I do!

LovingKent · 07/09/2013 20:03

Pierce squash several times with sharp knife. Microwave for about 3 mins. Leave to cool for a minute or two. Peel. Found this tip a while back but it really does work. The skin is much easier to remove this way Grin
