I like chicken pieces (browned), with onion, garlic, leeks, potatoes, white wine, stock and tarragon. If you brown the chicken with plain flour, then the sauce will be a bit thicker. Tbh, any type of veg with chicken pieces and wine/stock will be nice. I add pearl barley sometimes too.

I'm now going to unbox the slow cooker I've had hidden for months and use it.

Have had my slow cooker for about a month now, and have had varied success with it.
However, yesterday's meal was the best yet. Slow cooked a piece of brisket beef for about 10 hours on low. So good, and I keep going back into the fridge to pick on the leftovers - yummmmmm.

Basically, 8am put beef into s/c, add about inch of boiling water with one stock cube and reasonable glug of lea & perrins. Put lid on, switch on s/c to low and forget about it until approx 5.30pm. Boil pots and veg on hob, put Aunt Bessies in oven at approx 5.55pm and serve to hungry family at 6pm.

Lamb shoulder

Take off as much of the fat as you can manage.
Bitcher it till it will fit in the cooker
Rub over with garlic puree from a tube and harissa paste
Shove in slow cooker for 8 hours or until you are bored with waiting
Take it out and shred the meat
Drain the juices into a pan and simmer down to concentrate
Serve with salad and flat bread if you are being poncy, white bread if not

I wrote a recipe pamphlet for my Gran when she got her slow cooker. Her one is the teeny one from Lakeland. You can multiply quantities to suit. See below:

Slow Cooker Instructions for Gran

Use the LOW setting and cook everything for 6 to 8 hours. Don?t keep lifting the lid for a lookie as it will lose heat and not cook properly.

It can be used on HIGH too, but only cook for 4 hours if you are using the high setting. Meat won?t be quite as tender this way but it will still be fine and shouldn?t be tough.

My suggestion is to prepare your meal first thing and switch the slow cooker on in the morning, using the LOW setting, that way by suppertime it will be ready for you. If you forget to put it on in the morning put it on at lunchtime and use the HIGH setting it will still be ready for teatime.

Always have the lid on while cooking.

Whatever recipe you use, the moisture won?t be lost so the consistency will be similar at the end of cooking as it was at the start. That means if your mince is watery at the start it will be watery at the finish. In general you need to use less water than cooking on the hob. If when you?ve finished cooking and the sauce looks as if it needs reduced, switch to HIGH and leave the lid off for half an hour.

I?ve included potatoes in most recipes to make it a complete meal, but you can leave them out if you want.

Ingredients must be defrosted, other than small veg don?t use frozen food.

REMEMBER TO SWITCH IT OFF WHEN FINISHED

Soup

Add all your usual soup ingredients, and stock and cook on HIGH for 4 hours or LOW for 6-8 hours.

Remember the consistency will be the same at the finish as the start so you need less water than if you were cooking on the hob.

Chicken Dinner

chicken on or off the bone, 1 portion
handful of chopped onions
a sliced up carrot
small mealie pudding if you wish (and if it fits)
potato(es) peeled and sliced
stock or gravy

place the onions and carrot on the bottom of the slow cooker
place the chicken on top
mealie (if you?re having some) on top of the chicken
tatties on top of that
pour the stock over the top
put th lid on the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6 hours at least

Lamb Chops Dinner

Lamb Chops
handful of chopped onions
a sliced up carrot
potato(es) peeled and sliced
stock or gravy

place the onions and carrot on the bottom of the slow cooker
place the Lamb Chops on top
tatties on top of that
pour the stock over the top
put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours at least

Mince and tatties

Portion of nice mince
handful of chopped onions
a sliced up carrot and/or handful of peas
small mealie pudding if you wish
potato(es) peeled and sliced
stock or gravy

place everything in the slow cooker
pour the stock/gravy over the top give it a stir
put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours at least

Beef Stew

Diced beef
Onions
Veg of your choice
Stock or gravy (add a little red wine if you wish/have any)
Add potatoes if you wish

Add the whole lot to the pot, stir
put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours at least

Slow Cooker Stovies

Sliced tatties ? 3 or 4
Onions
Beef, small amount
Corned beef, couple of slices
Beef stock, I use COMPTONS

Layer the whole lot in the pot, pour over the stock and cook on LOW setting for 6 ? 8 hours.

Stir or mash when finshed.

Sausage Stew

Fine, good quality, sausages
Onions
Veg of your choice
Stock or gravy (add a little red wine if you wish/have any)
Squirt or heaped teaspoon of tomato puree
Add potatoes if you wish

Add the whole lot to the pot, stir
put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours at least

Roast Gammon

This is really fine, Gran 

Small roll of gammon
Dark brown sugar, say about 10 heaped teaspoons worth

Put the gammon in the slow cooker
Spoon the sugar on to the top of the gammon
Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours. This recipe does not work on high.
When finished lift the gammon out with a fork. When the juice at the bottom has cooled, just throw it away (it is no use for gravy)

Gammon cooked in Cider

(affa fine too )

Small roll of gammon
Tin of cider

Put the gammon in the slow cooker
Pour the cider over
Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook for 6-8 hours on LOW

The juice can be used for gravy if you wish.

Meat Joints

Pretty much any cut of meat or chicken can be used.

I?ve done chicken, turkey, pork, gammon, beef and they?ve all been affa fine.

Slow cooking makes it really tender

Place joint in slow cooker either by itself or on a bed of carrots.

Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours

When you take the joint/carrots out there will be juice at the bottom of the pot. Add your stock cube/gravy granules to make a gravy.

BBQ Ribs

Pork Ribs
Heinz BBQ Sauce

Place ribs in cooker
Squirt over some BBQ sauce
Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours

Rice Pudding

(I?ve not done this, go the recipe online, let me know if it?s fine)

4 oz pudding rice
1½ pints of milk (or use part evaporated/part normal milk if you prefer)
Butter
2 tablespoons of sugar
Cinnamon, sultanas etc. if you wish

Rub the butter all over the inside of the pot
Add the rice, milk and sugar and stir well
Cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or LOW for 5 hours

Dollop of jam on top when it?s done if you want!

I didn?t add herbs, spices and seasoning to the recipes, you know which ones you like and which ones to use.

Generally veg cooks better at the bottom of the pot, but if you have it on LOW all day, it?ll be fine.

That lot will get you started, you can try other things you like and give me some of your recipes!

But you can cook food from frozen in the slow cooker, I do it all the time.

Same here.

I once had guests for the weekend and realised to my horror on the Sunday morning that I hadn't taken the leg of lamb out of the freezer Shock

Luckily I have a large, oval shaped slow cooker so I got DH to saw the last inch of bone off the end and it fitted fine.

I threw in some veg, stock and rosemary and left it while we went out to the Malvern Hills for the day.

We got back to the most delicious smell and the best slow roasted lamb I have every tasted. It literally dropped off the bone and melted in the mouth Smile

I served it with mash and it went down a storm with everyone.

Fab, I didn't know that. My gran is 90 I just wanted her instructions to be as simple as possible.

I had a leg of lamb the other week that was too big for my 6.5 litre slow cooker. I put it in the dish and covered the slow cooker with foil and placed the lid on top. When the lamb was cooked enough to remove from the bone I cut it up and put it back in to cook in the juices for another few hours. The meat was fabulous when I served it.

I LOVE that you can cook from frozen. For me, it's half the appeal of a slow cooker, not having to think ahead.

I am so happy to have seen your ribs suggestion. It has made my day.

Saski ribs are a huge hit with my kids. You can add chillies or chilli flakes if you want spice or even chopped peppers or mushrooms. They're not in my recipe as my gran doesn't like those things.

And any BBQ sauce works.

I'm trying it tomorrow, bumpotato. I have to giggle at the mushroom suggestion and just remember that you've never met my kids, who have built-in mushroom detectors especially developed for them by NASA.

Pack of sainsburys basics cubed pork shoulder. Brown if you want. Bung in slow cooker with as much onion carrot and leek as you think. Mix pack of Schwartz somerset pork casserole with water throw over top.
Cook on auto for a bit, give it a prod decide its not cooking and whack it up to high. Give it a bit longer de idea it probably is ok and turn it down to low.....

Chicken, chickpea & chorizo stew is lovely (I found it on an earlier thread, so thanks to whoever posted it originally!).

Rough chop a large onion, 1 or 2 peppers (any colour), a good amount of chorizo, and any other veg you have lying around. Chuck in slow cooker with some chicken breasts or thighs (bones removed), a tin of chopped tomatoes, a tin of chickpeas, a glug of red wine and a stock cube. Cook on low for 8 hours.

Delicious!

AuntPittypat I like your chicken recipe, but why remove the bones? Just curious.

Has anyone ever done a pork tenderloin in the slow cooker? I'm thinking you need a fattier cut.
