well i went and saw it last night and i had been so excited about it. the film itself was great, i loved it all, still had the magical feel about it

BUT

what the hell is that stupid oompa loompa about. . i apologise but i cannot believe how much he f**ked me off. i was getting really angry towards the end. Couldnt understand what he was singing most of the time either!!!

sorry rant over, just ruined the film in which had he not been in it would have been fantastic

i loved it. i saw it last friday, and found it funny as anything. the lad who plays charlie is really good. it has roald dahls very twisted humour about it, the old film is too cotton candy like for me really. not sure if i'd take my dd1 who is 5 to see it tho as she loves the 1st film.

Iam going to take my 3.7 DS to see it tomorrow.
To those of you who didnt like it as much as the first, do you think that is because you are seeing it through grown up eyes, so cant possibly have the same magical qualities.

I went last night and enjoyed it... It was much more true to the book than the original film (slightly confused by the people who are miffed about the lack of things like the coat to warm up mixture etc - I've read complaints about that on other sites too... it is an adaptation of the book, not the last film).

I could have done with hearing the words of the songs mroe clearly, and didn't like all the stuff with his dad... is that in Great Glass Elevator (not read it since I was about 12), or completely Tim Burton gone nuts???

Loved Mike Teevee having a bit of a brain too, although it did kind of detract from the whole "tv will rot your brain" message!

thx gals, I'm sold on Madagascar.

Report

Madagascar btw is 86 mins ie just under an hour and a half.

Fernbeth - 114 minutes but bear in mind the ads and trailers that run for about half and hour beforehand. Dh took ds1, ds2 and dd at the weekend, and they were gone for about 3 hours in total!

yes fernbeth I took three 6yos to Charlie and the c f at the weekend and they enjoyed it, I did too, but I would say it was a bit complex/long (it?s nearly 2 hrs long) for a 3yo.
Second madagascra (tho I haven?t seen it) cartoons go down better with my dd (4) and ds 2 (2).

My ds (four in Sept) absolutely loved it and he's never been to the cinema before. We did read the book beforehand though, which I think is important.

Have not seen it but in the posters Johnny Depp looks like a gay Willy Wonka - does he come across that way and/or effeminate in the film?

Lucy5, how old is your DD? I was thinking of taking my nearly 3yr DD to it. It would be her first movie experience. Does anyone know of a better film to take her to, if not WW?

I went last night and I did enjoy the film especially Johnny depp. I didnt enjoy it as much as the first film but I think they did a good job. I did however think it lacked in some areas, the build up to finding the ticket was too long in the first film but it was too short in this film. I found it a bit black and white, it had lost alot of it's morality. The songs were such an important part of the book and film 1 but the moral message was lost in film 2's wishy washy songs. I think charlie's character was too one dimensional, although the little boy was a very good actor. It also was a bit too old for dd and she was disappointed as she loves film one. I spent most of the film thinking , they've missed that. I suppose the best way is to look at the film is through fresh eyes. If you havent seen the first film then you can't compare. A large group of teenagers about 15 or 16 sitting near by thoroughly enjoyed it. It was still good to watch Johnny Depp even if he was like Michael Jackson.

went to see it thes w/e with kids and was ready to slate it as I love the original. I hate to admit it but it was rather good. Agree withe JD seeming a bit like MJ ( both DH and I said this on way out).
Main thng was kids enjoyed it but asked why all the oompa loompa's looked the same!

Saw this last night. Was a bit dissapointed, and still prefer the original. Visually I thought it was great, the house and the factory etc, and the casting of the kids and there parents was spot on - they actually look alike! I also liked Charlie, thought he was great.

Didn't like the oompa lumpa man or the songs, and JD was not a patch on Gene Wilder. I too though he was freakishly like Michael Jackson.

I loved it loved it loved it!

I didn't like the original, it was far too old fashioned for me, and I love Tim Burtons quirkiness that he's added to this one. Some of the lines dh and I were wetting ourselves to in the cinema...

I agree I miss some of the things like the wallpaper, but I'm sure they left it out for a reason. I think they could have done with shortening the intro (I think finding the tickets went on way too long) and lengthening the time exploring the factory. And yes the oompa loompa was annoying but I think that was the point.

The thing that bugs me is the corpse bride (like nightmare before christmas) is out soon and what would you know, directed by tim burton, starring johnny depp and helena bonham carter (well their voices anyways)

I agree Johnny Depp is perfect for a lot of Tim Burtons roles but there must be two other people who could have done this!

Well i LOVED the Oompa Loompa - best bit about the whole film - generally couldn't see the point of it as it was pretty similar to original. Johnny Depp freakishly like Michael Jackson though, which was quite amusing!
