Unfair towards private school kids

Hello everyone,
I have seen an advertisement about national youth choir north east 2024. I am shocked to find out that they only admit state schools and home schooled kids. I am wondering if it is even legal. It is a clear discrimination case.
We have already experienced about music competitions/festivals are biased towards state schools. Judges don't have impartiality and blindly towards state schools.
Why aren't not judged by its own merits nowadays.
Very frustrated.

I agree I am surprised, but really have to agree that private school kids are already advantaged.

Are the Asian countries taking over the national youth choir? Shocking!

Are you taking the piss? It’s about equity not equality.

What does "woke" mean

It's just an outreach weekend. If you have a child at a private school, they can still audition for NYC, and your school can probably help with that.

In other words, they are encouraging kids to apply who might not normally hear of its existence from their school.

Oh behave op. I was slightly disappointed that due to the council cuts most of the playgroups and free activities disappeared. They still have a schedule up of what’s available, but the groups and activities are now only available to children with sen. I’m not complaining because I’m not a thick c*. Do you think the state school kids get more opportunities than rich kids overall?

Is that for Sing! ? It's a choral outreach programme. There's not much point in an outreach programme that doesn't target the people it reaches out to.

Are you talking about SING! NE 2024? It'll be because of funding and will be linked to the state education sector (DD went one year via the Durham Music Service). Also, do you not think that with a limited number of places it makes sense to exclude already highly privileged children to make space for state educated children in the most deprived region of the country.

There is a very easy way for your child to gain access of course. Maybe you should think about that.

Op - you know it was weeks ago? And private school kids can join the national youth choir. This is just a targeted event - presumably at kids who are under represented in the choir.

My kids attend free cricket coaching set up just for state school children. It’s funded by the English cricket board because private school children already have a massive advantage, they play so much more cricket already, have higher quality/specialist coaches and start much younger.

If they admitted just on merit hardly any of the state school kids would get in, as they are already disadvantaged compared to their private school peers.

This scheme helps level the playing field, brings everyone together for more equal opportunities, supports cricket and allows all these children to play together.

I imagine the rationale for choir is much the same.

Private school children really do already have so much more of an advantage.

A huge part of the National Youth Choir’s work is about widening access to the arts so that children from state schools, or who are home schooled, are able to take part and feel the joy music can bring to their life. Lots of their funding will be tied to this work because it comes from charities, the Arts Council, etc so it’s non-negotiable.

You talk about your child being in competitions and festivals already so they clearly already have access to the arts and the opportunity to enjoy music via a different route, why would you begrudge another child the same?

Seriously op, think what you're saying. I'm embarrassed for you.

I have a colleague like you who can't understand why her 2 DC at private school cant go to the local HAF holiday camp for kids on FSMs as in her words "it's not as if we've got loads of spare cash either" Confused

The whole purpose of that scheme/event is to offer something to young people who have more limited music opportunities. Private school pupils already have significant music opportunities.

Embarrassing to be moaning about this when you have a privileged life.

And as for calling it 'woke' Grin

Our local hockey club is on merit the private schools do SO much more hockey they are better so get in. The state pupils can’t get into the city club to improve their game but can’t improve without getting into the club as they don’t play much at school so a vicious circle of exclusion. Hard to improve hockey on your own as such a team sport. Dd only got in because a friend of a friend ran it for a year. There were only a couple of state school girls in the club.
