Can I teach music & recorder at home to an 8yo if...?

... my knowledge of music is rather limited?

I know how to read music, although just about, and dabbled in guitar and recorder in my distant youth.

One issue is that I learned abroad so I am a Do Re Mi, rather than C D E kind of woman. I can learn but it's not natural so it'll be a bit tricky until I get used to it.

Apart from the cost, and the lack of local teachers, I am thinking it may be best for DD to learn recorder with me (already knows the basics), then go the local music service at the weekends to practice with an ensemble.

Does that sound feasible to you, o experienced musical people?

The accompanist plays the piano part in the exam. If you're going to have an accompanist then it's a good idea to have your DD have a play through with them before the actual exam, just so they know each other's style a bit. They don't usually do specific "exam prep" though-you would want a teacher for that. Btw, I know that ABRSM insist on accompanist but Trinity lets you use a pre recording up until Grade 3. Accompanists can be expensive, so just a thought.

Great, thanks unweaved!

All we need to do now is find a suitable day and actually get on with things - so the hardest bit really Wink

Speaking of York, I have been perusing the Early Music Festival program, see if there is something particularly suitable and recorder-y to go to with DD. Maybe we all will unknowingly bump into one another there! Grin
