10k in 8 weeks - doable?

I have been running a little bit over the last couple of months, but hurt my foot a few weeks ago so haven't run now for 3 weeks. Will be going for my first run tonight.

I am doing a 10k run in 8 weeks time. Before i hurt my foot, i was able to run about 2 miles non-stop. I had built up to this gradually! I would obviously like to be able to run the whole 10k but accept I may need to walk a little bit. Am i going to be able to do this?! Am starting to doubt whether this is achievable, and kind of feel like pulling out, but think i will regret it later.

Any tips/advice?

Haha Onlygirl, we will be running the same run I am sure.....! Not sure the love of running has kicked in with me either, BUT I am very pleased with what I have achieved (which is paltry compared to anyone who actually runs properly........).

Need to get my sponsorship going now.......!

Orangina I'm the same, running in london on 14th july, and have raised money for charity so I HAVE to do it! I know I wouldn't bother unless I'm committed to something.
I didn't make it out last night, so going again tonight. I won't want to go but I am always really pleased that I did. Still waiting for the love for running to kick in.

Hi OnlyGirl..... I am trying to run every other day, have just about finished c25k and have a 6 week training plan in place to get me to 10k....

(crazy week at work this week means I haven't run since SUNDAY though, first time in about 8 weeks that I have missed a run......)

Will be running again tomorrow.

Interesting to hear that you think that you can do more or less anything once you get past 20 minutes omletta...... I agree that a lot of it is in the mind..... I find myself thinking that I just can't be arsed, but I HAVE to.... I am committed to a 10k charity run in July....!

Once you can run for 20 minutes you can run any distance.

I firmly belive that so much is in the mind.

Just gradually increase your distance and for the moment don't worry about speed. If possible find a loop of about 1k on your run at the end which you can do once or more times if you feel you have it in you.

I fell down the stairs and landed awkwardly on the side of my foot, i think I damaged some of the ligaments as it was very swollen & tender for a good few weeks. That was back in november, then I aggravated it again towards the end of april. It seems ok now, although did ache a bit on Monday. Will go easy on it!

It depends what the foot injury was and how thoroughly it has recovered. I hurt mine too, then didn't rest it for long enough before starting to run again, which set me back for another 3 weeks. Go carefully!

Definitely doable!

Admittedly I did used to run pre-DCs (about 6 years ago) but in the past month have gone from couch-to-5k pretty easily.

When I did a 10k pre-DCs it was probably about 8 weeks from couch to 10k in total admittedly I was younger then!.

Good luck!

Well I've just been out & ran 2 miles in about 26-27 mins, but that did involve a couple of minutes walking here & there! I'm hoping I can improve on that fairly quickly as previously I was able to do the 2 miles in about 20 mins with no walking. I'll go out again on Wednesday.

Hmm, hopefully I can do this!

How long does it take you to do the two miles? Zen labs has a free 10k app that goes from 5k in week 8 to 10k in week 14 - i.e. 6 weeks. But that would mean being able to so the two miles in about 20mins as a starting point.

Commit the next 6 weeks to a solid programme. With longers runs once a week addin a mile each week. Week day runs should be a mix of tempo and speed work. Could you a do a park run or race for life in a couple of weeks to build confidence? It's not too late at all but you need a quality 6 weeks to run it all. Good luck!
