acceptable names for "private parts"

Hi - we are potty training my daughter and have been using the word 'fanny' in lieu of vagina. It has been suggested this term may offend other parents at pre-school. What is an acceptable term?.........saying bottom for everything seems slightly confusing and could cause problems should daughter get sore or whatever on her whatever!
This is a bit of a minefield..........any suggestions?

I have never had a problem with telling my ds what his "bits" are called. He has always known from an early age he has a penis and mummy has a vagina....then again this is the child that asked at 31/2 if elephants had miscarriages...erm...I still must ask the next one i meet lol

We use "Zizi" which is French (so DD1 informs me - we didn't learn things like that in French when I was at school) for the DDs' bits. Before that, I'm afraid we had "bits" or "girl willy".

interesting. around here the word "fanny" would be a very rude word for a child to use...almost a swear word. i thought it was like that everywhere?

we dont really have a name for dd's bits, ds's bit is a winkie.

thanbks for all suggestions......am at least amused now and know am not alone ........can see why someone talked about can of worms. Agree any discussion about 'facts of life' daft at this point but do think potty training is bound to raise a few q's - babies have all had all bits enclosed before and are bound to be a bit curious. We tell them names of everythig else so can these bits have no name?
Think as family we'll stick with fanny and bottom and hope will not be ostracised in village for being rude!

Can somone explain to me why a small girl needs a special word for her vagina?

I'm pretty sure that when I was growing up it was just bottom, with a hole where wee came out and a hole where poo came out. When my mum explained the facts of life an extra hole, where babies came out, was also thrown into the mix. This was called the vagina. Simple.

My ds knows he has the hole for poo, but his wee comes out of a penis instead of a hole in his bottom. He has no idea that his penis is mutilfunctional, and has not yet asked how babies get out.

I think all this pussy-footing around is likely to confuse children. You don't need silly names, and if you don't want to leap too early into the correct names, what's wrong with bottom, wee-hole, poo-hole?

These incomprehensible euphemisms which pussyfoot around the word fanny or vulva are bad for our daughters self images and very anti feminist.

Let's not have our dd's grow up knowing their mums have problems with our own bodies.

It's amazing how often this comes up. It's crazy that we haven't managed to fix on a word we all understand.

This subject always reminds me of my grandma who used to call menstruation 'The Curse'. Shock

Ooh I get a feeling of deja vu here!! We used "tuppence" for DD but now she just refers to them as "bits" even though she does know the proper technical terms.

I've said this before - but I never had a name for my "front bottom" - when I was 11 we moved house and my new friend introduced me to the concept of a front and back bottom !

We use front bottom with dd - although she has recently picked up a really cute name for it from an Italian girl at school and that's "Fafalina" - means little butterfly apparently !

Not sure why it needs a name really though !

we use fanny and willy. although dd has a 'china also.

mine were front, bottom and middle bottom when I was growing up. At that age I'm not sure why we discussed the middle one???

Can i ask is vulva anatomically correct? I thought that was the flaps and urethra was the wee hole. Learnt all my non-front/back/middle bottom stuff off the tampax leaflet and prob not a very good drawing.
