THis was todays topic! Always exciting and today was a Friday, so the scope for a mini riot was considerable.

Bless them, the kids were fab. They were amazigly calm, interested and polite about the whole thing. They were all brave enough to use the correct words and asked all sorts of sensible quesions and were very open.

How much better than when this happened when I was that age! Parents are obviously more open about the whole thing and the kids have a much healtier attitude as a result.

They were great!

Are you a science teacher then?

Blandmum · 04/03/2006 09:01

Yes, I do all three sciencs up to year 9, mostly bilogy with some physics and applied science at GCSE and biology and human biology at A level.

I love it. only work 4 days a week which takes the pressure off.I also get a lot of sixth forms since I am considered to 'know my stuff' Blush so I have a great time table. I'm very lucky

sounds great.

I do 2 days in a junior school, which is great. Share a class with another part timer!

Blandmum · 04/03/2006 09:09

My day off is spread over the week, so I get three afternoons off, which is better than a whole day IMHO. I also don't have to share a class, which when you are teaching modular topics is easier.

I also do part time - 2 days a week and am findng it so hard. Partly I only get one free a week so my teaching days are full. I get into school at 6.30 in the morning and leave about 6 - half six just so I can everything done. I then still have either my lesson planning or marking to do at home. I find it so frustrating that I can't just leave things to the morning as that is two days later or if a Friday half way into next week and often too late. If I want to do a display or anything extra I need to go in on my afternoon off while dd is at nursery. I feel like I am working harder than when I did full time.

It also seems to be taking me forever to learn kids names and there are still members of staff that I do not know.

On a positive note though teaching part time means that I am able to keep up to date with marking and I am so much more positive as I have time out of the school to reflect on my practice and have me time.

TSAP are you primary or secondary?

twinsetandpearls · 04/03/2006 14:04

I am secondary - started in my new school in January - am hoping that as I settle in things will get better.

Blandmum · 04/03/2006 14:20

What board do you use, and are you making sure that the stuff you prepare for this year will be adaptable for the new science curriculum.....or you will have a lot of work on your hands next year too!

Let me know if I can help with lesson ideas. I've 'done' the whole GCSE biology curriculm a few times now!

I teach RE - and don't do any exam teaching. I teach an OCR open college unit.

Blandmum · 04/03/2006 14:28

sorry, mix up on my part! I though you were science Blush

Part of my problem is that most of the children I teach are not able to read the text books designed for children their age and primary stuff is patronising. So I ahve to make all my resources. Hopefully most of the stuff I am creating this year can be used next year.
