at £10k p.a.

How much would you have to earn to send all of them and each of them, please?

The ponies and horses are in full livery so must be costing a bomb - there's no 5am mucking out going on for these people. They are considerably wealthier than both sets of grandparents so I doubt they are in a position to help with fees.

No, they are just loaded. Lucky buggers.

Most people with multiple properties and polo ponies are either self-made millionaires or have come from generations of inherited wealth and a a salary of £150k could keep you ticking over. I think the average basic salary in the City is £175k and the average bonus £250k so £400k+ per annum.

Georgi - they're probably earning the high end of 6 figures and probably have substantial capital.

We will educate 3 privately and pay mostly out of dividends from DH's business.

I do know quite a few people where the grandparents pay but also know of a couple of families where there were fall-outs and children had to be pulled out of schools.

But you do have to earn quite a bit I think to put children through private school - you can't just cut down a bit and magic up £10k + for each child can you?

He is a self made man - property. Normal "upper" middle class grandparents on both sides but definitely not in the same financial league as the couple. Luck and nerve have played a huge part in it I expect.

DS starts private pre-prep in September. It's not expensive at this stage - well not to us, anyway - paid monthly the fees are just a little more than it has cost to send him to CM so really it is just like carrying on with that expense. Senior school will present more options to choose from, some of which are very expensive and would be beyond our means now (but may not be in 7 or 9 years time). In principle I don't want him to board, not before sixth form anyway but I appreciate that if he turns out to be say, a fantastically talented chorister (unlikely) or something then boarding may be the only way to give him what he wants. We've got another child on the way and will send her to the same pre-prep assuming we are still in the area in 4 years.
