Salzburg Festival dress code

deplorabelle · 26/03/2024 11:18

We've got tickets to an opera in the Salzburg Festival in July, and know we need to wear formalwear, but the Internet is divided over whether suit and tie, or black tie would be most appropriate. We would prefer to take black tie as both our DCs have this as they wear it for music performances.

Would we look appropriately dressed or madly overdressed in black tie?

Lucky you!

We did it in suit for DH and nice dress for me. I also got carried away and wore tracht one year because where else can you do that!

I don't recall that many in black tie TBH especially for matinee performances.

However you won't look wrong whatever you wear as there is a big range of people from those flying in on their private jets, to those on youth tickets.

Officially it's evening wear, definitely lots of black tie when I went (not recent) but women wore more flexible, though plenty looked like they had come straight from Cannes

@mitogoshi I definitely did not look like I had come straight from Cannes!

And DH was modelling 'Englishman abroad' like he usually does.

Oh thank you for the replies! It's an evening performance so maybe black tie will work... Gosh I'm nervous

Am very jealous, what are you going to see and what venue?

I would guess the Grosses Festspielhaus may be smarter, we were more back row of the Feldenreitschule.

Try to book a table at Triangel afterwards to see the singers (and the beautiful people) hanging out. And Cafe Sacher for breakfast.

@AnnaMagnani

I certainly didn't like if arrived from Cannes either, but lots of very glamorous people. There were a few in full ball gowns but they were an exception, think big skirts

Capriccio at the Großes Festspielhaus. Trying to give our boys exciting musical experiences but I feel a little out of my depth.

Thank you for the restaurant recommendations
