Best West End for 6 and 10 year old

I'm looking at booking a theatre trip for us during the Christmas holidays. My 6 year old is quite savvy but I'm not sure if Wicked would be too old for her? Matthew Bourne is at Sadler's Wells and I'm tempted by Sleeping Beauty, (if it had been Nutcracker I wouldn't have hesitated) but I'm not sure if the gothic vampires would be too scary?! Has anyone been to either or got any other suggestions?

Mary Poppins? (due to close in New Year). Wicked might be too sophisticated for 6 yo to follow but a good watch.

Frozen is spectacular. My absolute favourite and better than the movie.

Wicked is great but must watch Wizard of oz first.

Lion king or Matilda are great but pricey.

Mamma Mia also brill.

My then 7 year old slept through Wicked from about 10 mins in - right through the interval too Angry, he never sleeps that well at home. My 11 year old loved it. They both enjoyed Frozen. Mary Poppins is quite long for that age. I've never seen The Lion King, but that's always recommended.

Dd was 6 when we took her to see Lion King and 8 when we took her to Wicked. I think they were about the right ages.

Mary Poppins is a good idea if you can catch it before it closes. I have heard that Frozen is really good too.

I would hang on with Matilda for a couple of years as it can be quite dark in place with a sub-plot interspersed that might be hard to follow.

Matilda is great.

Mine loved the Little Match Girl at Sadlers' Wells, but not sure if it's on this year.

aoibhacado · 27/12/2022 10:30

mary poppins, matilda, wicked

Damnautocorrect · 27/12/2022 10:31

Back to the future the musical is wonderful. It’s not a rehash of the film. It’s brilliant.

Skiphopbump · 27/12/2022 10:32

Frozen is great as is Matilda. I personally wasn’t so keen in Wicked.

Isabelle70 · 27/12/2022 10:34

I took mine to Lion King, Mary Poppins and Shrek. I would go for Lion King.

I took my then 7 year old to wicked and she absolutely loved it! We listened to the songs a lot before we went and she still talks about it a year later (I absolutely love it too).

I took my (at the time) 5 and 8 year old to the lion king and to see Joseph, they both loved both shows.

I think the key to it is to listen to the songs before hand. Makes it so exciting to hear a song that they love sang on the stage with live music xxx

Frozen is spectacular! My 9yo loved it.
Wicked is next on our list (I’ve seen it twice already) but I think a 6yo would be too young for it.

My suggestions would be Frozen, Mary Poppins and The lion king.

My dd was 8 when we took her to see Wicked and I think that was a good age.

She saw Lion King aged 6. If you don’t mind heights the cheaper seats in the Grand Circle give a great view. If you go off centre make sure it’s the right hand side facing the stage, not the left.

Ive not seen Frozen but it’s aimed at children that age. I’d agree with the PP about Matilda. She’s maybe a little too young yet for the darkness and sub plot.

LastTrainBeforeChristmas · 07/01/2023 12:34

I personally think Wicked is quite dull and confusing. It has the couple of big songs that are great but I don't understand why people go wild for it.

downtonupton · 28/01/2023 10:42

Play that Goes Wrong - perfect for kids that age - you will hear them laugh like you have never heard them laugh before.

DS was 5 or 6 and DD 12ish and they both loved it so much. They often bring Peter Pan Goes Wrong back at Christmas too - also hilarious
