I'll start with Duke Special: saw him live as he opened a Divine Comedy concert last october, and subsequently bought his CD, which is really beautiful.
Great irish accent, beautiful songs, very much his own style, looks quite mad, love it.
He is on tour now but sadly I'll miss the Bristol concert.
So have a look at his myspace page
The new single features a great track sung with Neil Hannon (am waiting for my copy.....):
Drink to me only with thine eyes
And I will pledge with mine.
Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.

  1. I sent thee late a rosy wreath,

Not so much hon'ring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon did'st only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me,
Since when it grows and smells, I swear
Not of itself, but thee.

Joanna Newsom is amazing. I've got both albums and love them so much - its unbelievably beautiful. I went to see her at the Barbican supported by the London Symphony Orchestra - it was the best thing i've ever seen. When i play it to friends they look pained and unsure. Surely other people love her too?

Anyone heard anything by Joanna Newsom? What do you think?

Also, Amy Winehouse's latest album: what do people think?

Tinariwen. Album called Amam Imam. Mad electric guitar based music by Tuareg musicians from Mali. They look incredible but sound better. Amazing electric guitar blues, sounding like jimi Hendrix at times. Many famous fans such as Jimmy Page.

For those of you who like grungey rock, have a listen to Send No Flowers here . They were about to make it big about 10-12 years ago (signed with Warner Bros/EastWest), but it didn't work out. The album they released is fantastic though (you can listen to all of it on this site)..... I especially like Sepia.

And I'm not just saying this cos the bassist is a really good mate of mine...honest

Let me think, recent discoveries of mine include Cansei de Ser Sexy. They've done a song about Death From Above 1979 who I also rather like.
Drive By Argument, Tapes 'n Tapes (I love their song Cowbell), Professor Murder and Mama Shamone. Rather fun punky little band.
I know Regina Spektor's been about a bit now but I've just realised I like her after hearing her latest album.
I'm currently waiting impatiently for the new Maximo Park album out next month.

To Frog Princess - I am mad about the Divine Comedy and Neil Hannon, and I also love the Crash Test Dummies and Lloyd Cole, who do the same kind of melodic and literate pop. Also agree with the previous posters about the Decemberists.

O, and I also discovered Bob Marley.

Someone I work with bought a cd last year on the basis of the cool name of the band - Beduoin Soundclash cd Sounding a Mosaic.

Utterly fab African reggae.

One night, the first track is on the T-mobile advert!1 suddenly they weren't 'special' anymore!! But still great. From Toronto. If you like your reggae easy but sometimes a bit edgy, listen a wee bit to them.

Cindy Stratton. Missing pieces.

(But only because I'm on the album playing the cello! plug plug!)

Actually, even without that, I really rate Cindy's stuff.

I am very into Lucinda Williams at the moment, although I haven't got her new album yet.

I'm glad others have know and like the Decemberists.

Thought of another recommendation - Jill Sobule (self titled album) mostly acoustic, pretty, cute lyrics.

The Weakerthans is my big tip - lovely, Canadian, cracked voice, amazing lyrics. Go and buy LEFT AND LEAVING now and it will break your heart, particularly My Favorite Chords. They have the song over the closing credits of Wedding Crashers.

Big recommends.

I got into Illinois. I'm starting to get into the Christmas album, in a timely-type way . Working on Black Swan.

You got into Sufjan in the end then, NQC?

I like the Decemberists too, hoppy! I haven't heard the new album yet but am fond of 'Picaresque', so shall download 'The Crane Wife' asap...

I would also heartily recommend 'The Trials of Van Occupanther' by Midlake, and of course anything by the divine King Creosote (but that can hardly be called a recent discovery since he's on his 34th album )

And 'The Bird and The Bee' by The Bird and The Bee, that's a good album too. Getting plays aplenty chez Snaf...
