I'll start with Duke Special: saw him live as he opened a Divine Comedy concert last october, and subsequently bought his CD, which is really beautiful.
Great irish accent, beautiful songs, very much his own style,looks quite mad, love it.
He is on tour now but sadly I'll miss the Bristol concert.

The new single features a great track sung with Neil Hannon (am waiting for my copy.....):

Ex Girl: a Japanese protopunk/pop all girl band...truly amazing!

Guitar Wolf: Japan's premiere jet rock n' roll band.....also make zombie movies.

Johnny Dowd: A cross between Johnny Cash, Nick Cave and The Saint of Killers from 'Preacher'. Magnificently morbid guitar based country.

Polysics: A kinda hybrid of Devo, the movie Tron and a loud gameboy in white labcoats...Japanese electro nonsense at it's best.

Petty Booka: cutesy Japanese ukulele combo. Worth it for their cover of born to be wild alone!

I'm all about the Sufjan Stevens at the moment. Particularly 'come on feel the illinoise'. His lyrics are great, and the instrumentation is good, too.

I really really recommend that you try the 1st Album. 'vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot' (true) It is so lo-fi it's wonderful and the best one by far.

I also recommend 'Hope and Adams' by 'Wheat' I think you'll have to ebay for that as Sugar Free records have folded. I don't think it's available anymore sadly.

Then there's Flaming Lips , especially 'transmissions from the satellite heart' and Mercury Rev 'yer self is steam' nd from 'Deserters songs' on

It depends what else floats your boat TBH. I adore 'Heartbreaker' by Ryan Adams but....hmmmn. He's not done anything quite as devastatingly wonderful since. (grrrrh cos I believe he can if he removes his head from his bottom IMHO) I could prattle on for hours about music I adore but you probably don't need it!

There's wonderful stuff out there, just have a hunt.

I've got no idea of current trends, don't follow any chart music, obviously hear bits and pieces, mostly sticking with what I know, so I was pleased find something new and great (recommended to my dh by a work colleague, so not a discovery per se).

For the sake of this thread, however, I shall call them my discovery - they are The Decemberists, and they are fantastic.

Check out their album, 'The Crane Wife'. Download it now! The second and title tracks are instant classics. They're like...erm, folk rock?? is that a genre? early concept album Genesis, REM influences. Hard to describe. have a look at this on youtube - doesn't really do them justice, bit of sound distortion, but you get the idea.

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest. I was about to start a whole separate thread about them, where I'd no doubt languish on my own talking to myself.

I like the Decemberists too, hoppy! I haven't heard the new album yet but am fond of 'Picaresque', so shall download 'The Crane Wife' asap...

I would also heartily recommend 'The Trials of Van Occupanther' by Midlake, and of course anything by the divine King Creosote (but that can hardly be called a recent discovery since he's on his 34th album )

And 'The Bird and The Bee' by The Bird and The Bee, that's a good album too. Getting plays aplenty chez Snaf...
