The Cass Report

The Independent review of gender identity services for children and young people by Dr Hilary Cass has been released. I think this deserves a thread of its own here on Craicnet - 229 Irish children were referred to the Tavistock Clinic in London, where whistleblowers raised concerns about the use of puberty blockers and hormones, without proper controls or research on longterm effects.

Here is something I posted earlier on the FWR board; I was impressed by the RTE report, much more thorough and thoughtful than a lot of other ones.

Sky News 1 o'clock - Cass report 'welcomed' by.. Mermaids and Stonewall!
Interpreted criticism of care for 'trans' children as that there wasn't enough of it/wasn't prompt enough/wasn't respectful enough, not that it was poorly researched and based on flimsy evidence.

RTE TV[Irish state broadcaster] New 1 o'clock - their London correspondent John Kilraine focused on the report's criticism of the use of puberty blockers and hormones for young people, the lack of evidence re long-term effects, and the failure to consider other issues such as autism, mental health issues etc.
I'll see if I can get a link to that segment later.

Did they read the same report?😠

It's interestingly under covered, I think. Very little in the IT.

I imagine we might hear something tomorrow. Probably about how everyone who agrees with the findings are evil.

I see the Irish Times has courageously declined to have an opinion or editorial piece on this today.

I had to do a search to find it, hampered by the fact that there's a character on Fair City called Cass! It's fair enough, gives lots of space to the report itself.

HSE to consider UK’s Cass Review on gender as part of healthcare update ‘informed by best evidence’

No mention of the recent public warnings from Donal O'Shea and Paul Moran that the HSE is following an ideological path directed by TENI activists, not a medical one by experienced clinicians. Exactly as at UK GIDS.

Leading doctors report HSE to HIQA over transgender care
Leading doctors slam HSE over ‘ideological approach’ to child gender identity issues

Join the dots, please, HSE.

Will Teni use the Mermaids template of ' ooh but we never advocated for a medical pathway , honest '. They could apply for government funding to counsel people who have been harmed by these horrid drugs and surgeries.

And they'd probably get it , knowing our useless politicians.

The Cass review: an opportunity to unite behind evidence informed care in gender medicine | The BMJ
Great article from the BMJ, an authoritative and respected journal. It pulls no punches: 'unethical' 'life altering interventions' overmedicalising..vulnerable young people'.

Offering treatments without an adequate understanding of benefits and harms is unethical. All of this matters even more when the treatments are not trivial; puberty blockers and hormone therapies are major, life altering interventions. Yet this inconclusive and unacceptable evidence base was used to inform influential clinical guidelines, such as those of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which themselves were cascaded into the development of subsequent guidelines internationally.
A spiralling interventionist approach, in the context of an evidence void, amounted to overmedicalising care for vulnerable young people.

This is worth a read. While Cass is an absolute vindication of everything we have been saying, it is not the end by a long shot, not in the UK, and certainly not here. (Sorry for sounding that pessimistic note).

Here’s some NI info:

'Northern Ireland's specialist transgender service for minors is continuing as normal following a major report this week which rubbished the scientific basis for much of what’s called “gender-affirming care”.'

Here’s some info on TENI’s view of the Cass Report:

'TENI added, “We remain concerned by the prevailing narrative in the UK, which often expresses scepticism and hostility towards granting medical professionals the authority to prescribe puberty blockers to young individuals, despite evidence suggesting their potential for positive health outcomes.

“This sceptical narrative within the report ignores the wealth of research, from over a dozen studies of at least 30,000 trans and non-binary young people, that gender affirming healthcare is both safe and effective at improving their mental health and wellbeing.”'

All high-quality and relevant studies would have been included in a review of this nature. No idea why TENI think otherwise.

A lot of intelligent people believe in absurd things though.Smart enough to collate all the evidence that supports a theory they instinctively like and subconsciously ignore the facts that undermine it .

I have a family member like this. Very articulate yet seems to have no filter , no natural skepticism. Currently spamming my inbox with dozens of videos about the Carnivore Diet. In my opinion, older members of TENI, travellers to Malaga Airport, need the concept of innately trans kids to be believed to make them look like their behaviour is also innate and can’t be helped, without the shield of trans kids their dodgy behaviour will come under scrutiny.

It currently feels like they won't get any scrutiny for anything they do, no matter what it is. The true believers are never going to accept it.

Thanks for that link. It was a very measured and detailed discussion.

Dr Moran (and Dr O’Shea) have been diligent in trying to get the HSE etc. to realise that the current affirmative model is not good medicine but, apart from occasional good interviews on radio, the establishment in Ireland has largely ignored or belittled them. I really hope the Cass Report will make media and government types realise that they need to pay attention to Moran and O’Shea and that we are not helping children and adolescents by affirming them.
