Self isolating and food shopping

I returned to London this weekend. My housemate instantly came down with a cough (I should have stayed at my parents!) and so now as a house we are self isolating as best we can in a house share, whilst we await test results. She is fine in herself so we hope it's negative and we get the test results by Friday.

The problem is as I came back very recently I have very little food in the house. I have looked at online delivery slots and can't get any til Saturday. I have tried local NHS volunteer numbers but haven't yet had any response. I do not have any friends or family nearby who could come and drop some shopping off - the closest friend to me is isolating too and my brother / parents are quite a way away.

Could anyone please point me to any other resources which may be able to help? No financial issues, I just need to get some shopping! If not, I will have to go out either very early or very late but would rather not risk it unless it's an absolute last resort.

Oh sorry I see you're sorted! Glad to hear it.

Sainsbury's chopchop. It's bloody amazing. Up to 20 (or 30 I can't remember) items delivered within the hour. £5 delivery charge bit the first was free when I did it. They ring you if what you want isn't in stock to check on alternatives. It's properly ace.

I have indeed @TeddyIsaHe!

Just to prove how unusual it is for me to order food, I had a call from Tesco Bank this morning concerned about possible fraudulent activity on my card - because I had ordered deliveroo! Grin

Try coop in London for same day delivery

Also Iceland - its a bit ‘basic’ but you can do a full shop including milk/bread/fruit/veg and they have priority slots for the self isolating : usually next morning

Morrisons were doing a phone ordering service for quick delivery. Try asking on local facebook pages - a lot of local businesses were doing local deliveries even though they don't have websites.

Have you tried all supermarkets? Also worth telephoning a local branch or Waitrose to see if they can arrange anything, I know they did this by phone for a family friend who had no access to a computer and shielding during lockdown.

@cologne4711

Do you have a car? You could do click and collect. I think they just put it in your boot so there's no contact with anyone.

No car I'm afraid! I can drive and I'd love one but it would be so rarely used there's no point.

@dollypartonscoat

It's a sorry state of affairs when people in London think they have no way of isolating and getting a bag of shopping!

I didn't think that, but as someone who never gets shopping delivered I'm not aware of all the resources available, and as the service that's supposed to help you (NHS volunteers) isn't responding, I thought I'd ask here instead. That's all.

The modern milkman might be a good option, they do stuff other than milk like veg boxes, bread, butter.

I was going to suggest what @cologne4711has said, the last few times i did click & collect they put the shopping in the boot for me so the risk would be very low if you did have COVID. You could wear a mask to talk to them through the passenger window, or even write your name on paper and hold it up to the window.

Try a veg box company. Some of the ones around us have expanded their range to include milk, cheese, ham, meat, eggs, bread etc .

Morrisons and Aldi are still doing food boxes too.

I forgot some more - Borough Market is online, lots of wholesalers like Natoora, Wellocks, independent butchers/delis offer their own delivery too eg Ginger Pig, H G Walter, La Fromagerie. Superdrug also have one hour delivery with Stuart if you need a pharmacy.

No Co-ops nearby, but I will definitely be investigating deliveroo later! I really wouldn't have thought of them other than for takeaways so thank you to those that have suggested it.

I think I will also book the Saturday slot like another poster suggested and get a big shop in then, just in case.

Bloody hell!

M&S might have disappeared from Deliveroo, but Aldi are on there. As are Holland and Barrett

@Marmaladey

If you have Co-ops near you they do their own same day deliveries as well as being on Deliveroo. M&S has left Deliveroo since teaming up with Ocado sadly.

Waitrose seem to have replaced M&S on Deliveroo though.

We have Aldi, Co op, Waitrose, Partridges and lots of independent corner shops, delis and bakeries on Deliveroo/Uber Eats. Even Holland and Barrett. I think Morrisons are also on Deliveroo in some areas. Other options in London are Amazon Fresh (they have Morrisons, Booths, Wholefoods Markets and big name brands) for same day delivery. Beelivery also do 1 hour delivery for groceries for a one off delivery fee. Sainsburys ChopChop and Waitrose Rapid also offer 1 hour delivery, the Co op delivers in some postcodes. Farmdrop usually have next day delivery slots (expensive but amazing food).

Our local council has sent out letters with their dedicated isolation helpline details. The service includes food packs. I believe it's the duty of every council to have one. Investigate that as well, just in case you need it in the future.

You’re in London so almost certainly can get shopping via Deliveroo. We’ve used it here in the Home Counties.

your brother or parents could get a small parcel in the post to you - hermes will pick up from their door the next day and deliver the day after - again, if you book that saturday slot that would mean you only need take aways until Thursday.
