I read the above which gives a good description of what to look out for in young children, I had been following this subject of Kawasaki closely since reading it and finding that mums of young children thinking their little ones would be immune to Covid 19. I am not posting this to frighten anyone just to make all the mums out there aware.

Hello everyone - we’ve had reports about this thread from many of you concerned that some of the information shared here may not be accurate.

We understand that folk want to discuss this tragic story, which is being widely reported in the press. That said, we'd advise MNers to exercise caution too because there are still so many unknowns in this situation at present.

Whilst we deleted a previous thread discussing the story, we're going to leave this one standing as it seems to be progressing in a more balanced way.

It looks as though they have identified markers that show which children are most at risk from this. It is really amazing the pace at which medicine advances sometimes.

mac12 thanks for the updated info. Are there specific symptoms that GPs/parents should be aware of, for PIMS-TS?

This is taken from the European CDC alert on Pims-TS (download link below)

“PIMS-TS cases presented with signs and symptoms similar to atypical Kawasaki disease and Toxic Shock Syndrome. All children had prolonged fever, abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms (50–60%) as well as conjunctivitis, rash, irritability and, in some cases, shock, usually of myocardial origin. However, some respiratory symptoms could be present, and dyspnoea was usually correlated with concurrent shock.
Some children were positive for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR, while others were positive for IgG antibodies. COVID-19 history or COVID-19-compatible symptoms could be either elicited in the history of the child or a household member. Markers of inflammation were elevated: neutrophilia with lymphopenia, significantly increased C-reactive protein, D-dimer, IL-6 and ferritin levels, and hypoalbuminaemia.“

I'm still not worried about my < 14 getting Kaw thing.
I am worried about 20,000 fewer nurses & 7000 fewer doctors existing in each year from 2021 onwards. My DC could be one of those missing professionals.

Heck, my < 14 has a helping personality. Maybe he will also be one of those delayed-into-existence professionals - if he has to wait a year or more to get on with real education again.

Has anyone said children are immune to covid?

Kawasaki can happen after contracting viruses. Covid is a virus. Kawasaki is not Covid.

Theres less jawasaki cases reported this year than usual. Yes parents should be aware, but all this scare mongering is disgusting.

Especially when peolle are using the death of someone's child to do it.

Is it certain this case of kawasaki, was after the child had covid?

I want my 14yo back in school. I believe I have assessed the risks and I would be happy to send her.

This is so rare, it’s good to be aware of the condition, as if it’s caught in time 99.99% it is a good outcome.

I haven't got a little one/younger person. I don't find it scaremongering, helpful actually as I work with children and it raises general alertness to conditions, especially as younger ones are often going down with something, have a temperature or rash.

@Alex50 According to the NHS, 25% of cases go on to develop heart issues, fatal in 2-3% so it is most definitely not ‘99.9% a good outcome’
And to re-iterate, this new syndrome is NOT classic Kawasaki - it’s something new from a virus that only met its first human 6 months ago. So many unknowns. Numbers are obviously v low now so no need to panic but because right now no-one on the entire planet knows what long term impacts are, we should be cautious & parents should be aware of what to look for.

It is still very rare only 250 worldwide, there seems to be a link with black/African/Caribbean and Asian children. The first 8 children were all ethnic minority.

Also it looks like the children may have had an underlying heart condition.

There were 230 cases in Europe, over 100 in New York City, plus many more across US - those numbers from week to 10 days ago. I haven’t seen more recent numbers.
The article you listed actually says the children were mostly healthy & had no underlying conditions. The heart damage in the article was caused by the inflammatory disease -the kids did not have it before.
